Is their any modulation of the output when you do that? Is there hum, or a
signal (envelope) on the output, if so, you may have some sort of audio
oscillation modulating the output if it is a single sinusoidal it would create
a CW tone. The modulator itself may be unbalanced....good luck with your
troubleshooting.

Hi all

Thanks to Martin and Dave for the advice so far.

One thing is puzzling me with the radio and that is this, When I switch
to SSB (upper or lower) the radio transmits what ever power level has
been set with the drive control, I have always thought that it only
transmitted with audio is applied via the mic, or have I got it wrong!.

I am wondering if I have additional problems.

The voltage levels on the 4558 appear to be correct, I have changed it
anyway but the voltage on U1 pin 1 is only <3v not what is written, all
other pin voltages are correct.

So more head scratching today ( I must be careful of getting splinters
ha ha).

stay well and happy
