Mike, don't give up on your meter if you can CAREFULLY remove it from the dase cover and see if the meter will deflect by blowing puffs of air to it, and see if needle is unglued, or stuck to something in the gap of the magnet coil.

You may have a particle of something that got into the gap between armature and the magnet assembly.

The other thing that commonly happens is the leads to the meter movement have a soldering failure at the coil or at the terminal posts.

Work over a clean desk top, and do everything slowly and gently to not lose tiny screws that hold the cover on the meter, if that type. If there is still a practicing jeweler in your town, have him take a look at it. A head magnifier and strong light are big helps when working with fine instruments like a good meter.
