I'm not so sure we aren't OVER complicating things :-)

There is a lot of fliexibility, for certain.  But the only non-typical control 
that's on that list is "threshold".  I doubt that you'll see a measurable 
difference in score/results if you just leave the filter selection on auto.

That leaves only one new control to get a feel for, and for most operating 
even that is generally set and forget.  So maybe not so terribly 
complicated?

There's been a lot of discussion on AGC threshold.  I'm a bit surprised 
there hasn't been more comment on the AGC HANG feature.  I've found 
it to be very useful,. and use in the range of 0.5 -2 seconds (sometimes 
more) of AGC hang for most operating.
