I have all but given up on bead designed chokes where I can. I use FT240 cores for most choke construction now, and fall back to beads only if physical constraints force it.

Are the #73 beads detrimental for the other bands?

What else might I use #73 beads for?

Nothing. W2DU's use of them for his HF chokes was a good one for the time in which he designed them, but that was 40-50 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. They are still suitable for HIS most robust design (200 beads) with low power, FOR HF, but that design is no longer the best solution.
