Comments:
I wasn't sure what to expect going into the contest. Certainly the SFI was
extremely high but there was the ominous prediction of a disturbance occurring
sometime Saturday. I did not expect for the low bands to be as good as they
turned out to be, especially 160. Both nights I was easily able to run EU and
work almost everything I heard on top band. The new crossfire phasing system
for 160, designed and built by WU2X, really helped on both receive and transmit.
Lots of EU went into the log on 160 but the real treat was working H44WA. 4W8X
was also a nice surprise on 80 meters.
Working low band Asian mults from the east coast as a single op can be tough.
The process for me is
1. Find the mults
2. Put them in the band map
3. Frantically bounce around calling each one while trying not to fall asleep.
If you are lucky, a couple will be logged before the EU madness breaks loose on
20.
Lots of multiplier passes were successful this year: A65, EA9, LX, OX, C6, RM9,
UA2, ZS, KP2, and ZF. I really appreciate everyone moving for a run of the mill
U.S. QSO.
Like the SSB contest, I operated in person. Our remote works great but I just
wanted to be on site and enjoy the atmosphere. It was nice to have N2QV at the
station during the contest. He was busy working on a new pair of phased
beverages. Occasionally he would bring by a cup of his delicious coffee from
zone 37. That was a nice pick me up! WU2X really had the station setup nicely
and all ready to go for the contest.
Thanks to my wife and daughter for making the trip with me. We drove this time
which meant a one way trip was approximately 20 hours. It was nice to have them
around for Thanksgiving.
Congrats to all of the scores out there! N6MJ's score is incredible! I can't
decide if Dan's practice regimen is motivating or demotivating, :)
I might be better off just dusting off my golf clubs and trying to find my
swing.
