Comments:
I am scientific minded when analyzing facts, but this time it really seemed that
someone (call it Murphy, if you want) didn't want me to participate in this
edition as SOAB. Here's a quick chronology:
- CQWW SSB: Julio (EA3AIR) participates in SOSB15 HP. All good.
- First week of November: we detect high SWR on 20m. Lucky for me, Julio is
staying few more days there, so he can track it down to a faulty connector in
the 20m stub. He replaces it, all good.
- Couple of days later: the differential switch of the whole station trips when
we plug the OM4000. Julio is coming to Barcelona on the following day for few
days, so no time to check anything. No idea what is going on.
- Second weekend of November: Julio, Patro (Julio's XYL), and I travel to the
island. They are staying until the end of this contest, and I go there just for
24h to advance some work towards it. This includes some changes inside, setting
couple of beverages, and setup some stuff for the remote (not needed for the
contest, but a nice to have). And of course, to open the amplifier and try to
understand what is going on.
- Couple of days later. Thanks to Tibi (OM3RM), Julio is able to identify a
faulty capacitor, fortunately easy to reply. Tibi always replies incredibly
quick, the support of OM Power is great. We are on track again.
- 10 days before the contest. The main tower has a system that allows us to
lower the antennas very easily. This is very convenient when we are not in the
station for long periods of time, as they remain more protected against winds
and storms. We didn't put up the antennas in my 24h trip. This is a very easy
and effortless one-minute-one-person operation that can be done at any moment...
right? Well, when this operation was done, we found out that we couldn't turn
the antennas. The problem was tracked down, and both the rotor and the box
seemed to be damaged.
At this point, my loved ones start worrying about my mental health :-)
- Weekend before the contest. Being convinced that I would not be able to do a
SOAB, we decide to take our last shot and try to find a replacement, as we would
need it anyway. With almost no reaction time, Pablo (EA4TX) and Ángel (EA5Z)
are able to provide a new rotor and rotor box, and send it to Ibiza. If both
items arrive in time, they can be installed on Thursday (I was arriving on
Wednesday night). There is a tinny bit of hope again.
- Two days before the contest (Thursday). The box arrives on Tuesday, and the
rotor arrives during the morning, so together with Julio and Vicenç EA6FO (who
is a beast, as he actually did most of the physical work) we manage to install
and calibrate the new rotor (not without several calls Pablo and Ángel).
Really, if you ever need to get a rotor or any type of tech for your station,
talk to Pablo and/or Ángel. Their level of commitment and professionalism is
superb. Thanks, guys!
- One day before the contest (Friday). By midday, the last details of the rotor
have been ironed out, and everything is ready. My level of tension and
adrenaline in my body is right the one I need to try to sleep few hours before
the contest starts (irony mode ON). But apparently I was also tired, so I
managed to sleep for couple of hours. Ufff.
After all these problems, the contest went well. I had a 9k QSO goal pending
from last year, that I couldn't reach. Instead, I improved on passing
multipliers from band to band, which increased the claimed score with respect to
previous years.
However, unlike previous editions, I never had very big long rates. I had some
intense minutes, then followed by long periods of CQing. Bands were quite noisy
on the first night, but 80m were better than I expected, taking into account the
SFI. I stayed in 10/15 for most part of both days. Very strong signals from
everywhere on these bands, specially in the second one.
I hope the score is at least sufficient to be EU #2 (at least this is what the
Live Score showed, I hope there are no surprises). And I say second, because the
first place goes to Filipe (CT1ILT/CR6K), no discussion. And after many years, I
sense a pattern here, so I guess I can always say I got to be #1 after him :-)
Congrats on the 10k QSO effort buddy, well deserved! And also congrats to Dan
(N6MJ/ZF1A) and Chris (KL9A/TI7W) for their performances. For a moment I was
about to stop the contest, get some popcorn, and watch the show. Just
incredible.
