Comments:
Who needs a calendar when you can identify weekends by a
significant degradation in solar conditions when there is a
significant contest in-progress? Old sol continued his
pattern of behaving during the mid-week prior, then agitating
in time for the contest :-{
In this case, K index laid low on Monday through Wednesday
(around 0-1), only to spike strongly on Thursday - Sunday
(3,4,5,6, all the way up to 7!). We experienced reduced
propagation on polar routes: greatly attenuating signals from
northern Europe, while leaving signals from southern Europe
largely unaffected. Although we started out with hopes of a
record-setting M/2 score from the NW, the wind as the contest
progressed.
This manifested as a truly solid start for us and some
puzzling results on the online scoreboard: we managed to hold
the top position of all posted USA M/2 scores for the first
4-5 hours, outpacing super-stations such as W3LPL, and K9CT.
Pinch me, could it be real? ;-}
We seemed to have the advantage during the first few hours
while elsewhere in the country was apparently experiencing
frustrating conditions. It wasn’t long, though before the
tables turned and other stations caught up and left us behind.
But that’s all part of the fun of the online
scoreboard--seeing in realtime what is going on with
competitors around the country (and globe).
Friday night’s run into Asia was lackluster--as was
Saturday’s. We weren’t going to get much help there. On
Saturday morning, we encountered mediocre European results on
20 and considerably worse on 15. Thankfully, we still had
reasonable propagation into Asia on the high bands. Sunday’s
European opening fared better, although it was dominated by
contacts with southern Europe and a dearth of northern
European stations.
That’s not to say we didn’t have fun! There were some some
good runs (on 15 and 10) along with decent country totals
(DXCC+ on 20 and 15, 79 countries on
10).
On the technical side, remote live audio worked better than in
times past -- probably due to bandwidth improvements made
since previous efforts. Pre-recorded play back preserved my
voice for much of the time, yet I could still use live audio
when the rate or conditions warranted. (Ever tried to confirm
a call with a foreign-speaking station with QRM/QSB using
pre-recorded fixed-phonetics that mismatch those given by the
caller? "You say 'Florida,' I reply 'Foxtrot', let’s call the
whole thing off.")
Overall, we had lots of fun: we didn’t kill ourselves pulling
crazy hours and still wound up with a respectable result.
