In a recent contest I listened in on, I heard the contest participants exchange RS(T) report and a serial number. What is the serial number they were exchanging and where does one get this number from?

The number is simply a sequential number, starting with one. The first guy you work you send a "one" the next a "two" and so on.

I've heard some exchanges where the caller appears to just want the rare one (i.e. is not contesting) and uses the serial number 1, other times they don't send a serial number at all.
Which do you thnk is preferrable (if either) to the DX station in the contest?
