I'm wondering if the assembled masses have opinions regarding the new compact rigs and their adequacy as primary rigs for VHF/UHF contesting and satellite work. Are they adequate out of the box? If not, what is required to make them adequate? Are they even capable of being made adequate?

I guess it really depends on what you mean my "adequate".
It also depends a great deal on what you want to do with the rig.
I have found that 50Mhz and up radios in general are never up to the standards that
we have come to expect in some the better HF radios and some of these single
band radios cost well over $1000 per band. You would think that you would
get a receiver and features that would be on par with a pretty good HF rig - often you don't.
But having said that - if you live in an area were you do not have lots of KW stations on 2m and up
you can get away with poor dynamic range and most of these radios will work quite well.
Even on 6m you will find that most of the time these radios work very well - it is only when the
band is really open that you will have to move further away from the big signals - something that
my TS-850 on the HF bands handles well.
So I guess what I am saying is that these rigs work well if you do not live in KW alley.
If you want to get the best you can get - then I suggest you get a Downeast microwave
transverter and combine that with a serious HF rig - this will give you all of your
HF rigs features and you will have a rig with great dynamic range and great
3rd order IP as well.
At the W5KFT contest station we have been using transverters and super HF rigs and it
has not been a problem - but I think we can get away with alot since we do not
have any KW stations with in 40 or more miles of our location.
