Hi,
How many different types of contests are out there. If one wants to set up a contest, what criteria is involved. Do you have to apply to the IARU, for example?
Thanks,
Steve (VP9HW)

I think anyone can set up a contest, and you don't need to apply to anyone.

Of course, if you want it to be successful (i.e. have good participation) you need to design and publicize it properly. For instance, setting up a contest on 20m phone during the CQ WW DX SSB contest would be challenging, as the band will be choked with people working that contest, and they will both overwhelm your contest and fail to understand the difference. There are some instances of smaller contests "piggy-backing" on big ones, but they do so carefully. And I didn't even mention the issues around accepting and processing entries, and then publicizing results ... There can be a LOT of work in running a contest, I imagine.
