I have been a ham for years, but a general for a short time only. Can anyone tell me what the numbers mean or relate to when you check in with some folks that are contesting. I hate to sound stupid but I havbe no clue.

Gary,
it depends on the contest. In most contests it is a serial-number. Your first QSO is Nr 001, second 002, ....
But there are also contests where they ask for age, power, ... You need to read the rules.
