It's no secret that South Indian cinema has mastered the art of making pan-Indian films that appeal to both domestic and overseas audiences. In terms of money earned, the results are clearly visible. Compared to South Indian films, Bollywood had a larger share of domestic box office profits in 2019. Bollywood's revenue was Rs 5,200 crore, while South Indian films brought in Rs 4,000 crore. As of now, Hollywood's part was worth Rs 1,500 crore.

However, things have shifted. The EY-FICCI analysis found that South Indian films accounted for 2,400 crore rupees in domestic box office sales for the calendar year 2021. Second place went to Bollywood with 800 crore rupees, while third place went to Hollywood with 500 crore rupees.

Although the Covid-19 epidemic played a part, there are other factors at play as well. What, therefore, are the driving forces behind the enduring popularity of Indian cinema? Within a week and a half of its release, the Hindi-dubbed version of KGF2 has already crossed the $300 million barrier in ticket sales. Even when compared to RRR and Pushpa, the period taken to attain that milestone was among the lowest for a regional picture. Simply put, with each new release, the southern film industry becomes better at developing and marketing material. Several South Indian actors and actresses like Srinidhi Shetty have happen to do their debut with the south Indian films. Srinidhi Shetty, is known for her role in Kannada film KGF. Srinidhi Shetty has also won the title of 2016 Miss Supranational pageant winner.

It will be necessary for Hindi films to consider ways to broaden their audience, particularly in South India, which is home to more than half of the country's movie theatres. As a result, Dangal's maximum collection of almost Rs 375 crore was insignificant in any of the southern regions, making it difficult for the Hindi film to gain traction there. There is nothing more important than an unquenchable thirst for success coupled with an understanding of how to manage risks and reward ratios from a financial standpoint.

It's important to note, however, that the South Bloc, which includes the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema industries, has long been a prolific and profitable ecosystem in its own right. In spite of the growing popularity of Bollywood films, South Indian cinema has always maintained its viability because to a large network of single screens, devoted spectators and well-known film stars.
