Comments:
First off, big thank you to Andrew ZF1EJ for allowing me to use the station for
this contest. I could not have pulled this off without the help of Marty NN1C.
Shortly after WWSSB was over, Marty tore the M/2 station apart and set it up for
me to do SO3R for CW. Basically all I had to do was show up and operate. I
also received great help from Bill W9KKN and John K6AM. Without this great team
of guys behind me there would be no way to pull this off.
WWCW is one of my favorites and I really wanted to put in the best score
possible. I started to prepare in July just to get ready. I spent time most
days running on RUFZ and Morse Runner/DXLog. I would also listen to previous
recordings of contests that I have when I had extra time. In addition to that,
I had access to the station remotely and from the start of October until now I
made over 6500 q's as ZF2MJ just testing the bands and antennas. Its alot of
work but when you know KL9A is doing the same thing it really motivates you to
try harder.
My wife Kelly was nice enough to join me on this trip. She came the first few
times that I was here but hasn't been back for WWCW since '17. She did an
amazing job of making sure I was well fed and taken care of. I never had to ask
for anything, things would just show up. This allowed me to maintain focus on
the contest.
We arrived on the island on Sunday. This gave me time to make sure the station
was ready, and time to explore the island a bit. By Monday morning the station
was 100% ready to go. I spent the rest of the week making eating nice meals and
enjoying time at the beach. There is usually no time for stuff like that.
Going into the contest I knew that conditions would be great. I didn't know
anything was wrong until about 16z on Saturday when all the Northern EU became
weak and fluttery. I didn't know how bad it was going to be until it was time
for JA on 10m. This was going to be the year that I finally get to run them!
Well, they were there, and all were S0 and that was that. It was disappointing
and I had visions of Chris at TI7W running them at a high rate. I continued on
but thoughts of getting to 13k q's started slipping away. As usual Chris and I
don't look at the scoreboard at all during the contest so I had no idea if I was
ahead or not but I knew I had to keep going at full force if I wanted to
succeed. Once it became clear that 13k wasn't going to happen I changed my
focus a bit and started focusing more on mults. I hit the 3rd radio hard on
Sunday and it helped the score quite a bit.
My main focus all along was to try to beat Chris. I didn't even know what the
previous overall record was and I had no idea I was coming close to it. My wife
finally said something with about 5 minutes left in the contest. I have to say
it was a good feeling to hear that! Now its up to the log checkers and my logs
aren't always the cleanest. We should know in a few months.
Thanks to everyone who got on for this one. I asked a lot of guys to move for
the mult and almost everyone at least tried. It is greatly appreciated on this
end. Congrats to all the high scorers especially in the SOAB category that
joined me in this crazy pursuit of ours. Guys like KL9A, CT1BOH, N2NT, W2SC,
CT1ILT and AA3B really make this game of ours a lot of fun.
