Thanks to Kam for inviting me and putting in all of the countless hours of work
into the station to get it up to fighting strength. The amount of work
necessary to stay 2BSIQ capable and competitive in Central America is
staggering. The Icom 7851's were an especially major upgrade from the previous
radios I have used here. Kam and his wife Bertha are amazing hosts and very
gracious to let this lid from the snowy North hang out for a week.
The contest ended for me at 1701z on Sunday. Station up to the task with ZERO
issues, but the operator apparently was not. I will keep working on that part.
But the contest...wow! Some really super cool stuff, but also some really
frustrating band conditions.
This was my 10th contest from TI5W/TI7W, and this was the first time I didn't
feel super loud on all bands. Typically you can spin the dial, hit F1, and go.
This year I had lots of frequency fights and I usually lost. Could not buy a
QSO on 20m most of the time, which was expected and typical of many places
nearer the equator, but certainly not ideal for winning. I could hear the zone
39 guys and 4W8X on all sorts of weird paths, but working a W9 or EU was a
struggle. The band was open, but not open enough to bore a hole and get noticed
by the 2nd and 3rd tier stations. Even 10 and 15 were that way and I definitely
did not expect to struggle there.
The new and improved 2el 80m wire yagi to JA was a rock solid killer. I have
never had such a loud and easy to work JA pileup on 80m before from here. This
was also the first contest I have done here where I actually worked a JA on 10
meters. They were not as deep as I hoped for, but it is great to see 10 meters
alive.
160m was effectively dead on Friday night. The big USA stations were just above
the noise, and the beverage was required hardware for most QSO's. No EU heard.
The JA's were booming later in the night, so that was encouraging at least. I
was determined to not miss any 160 mults on the second night. Watching the Flex
waterfall I did some SO3R and waited for the band to come up to decide when to
CQ there. I went every 30 minutes for a few hours, and I still had lots of
requests for QSY's to 160. I tried...I really did! But I did catch a really
great EU opening finally and lots of mults made it into the log. Some of the EU
(and zone 33...) guys should probably turn their power down a bit instead of
calling when they can't hear the DX.
Someone should really do a presentation on zero beat pileups and make sure every
operator in the entire world has to read/watch it and then sign a form saying
they understand and will not just click a cluster spot and blindly call the DX.
We say it every year, but the immediate blur of calls on exactly one frequency,
in two ears, all weekend, is just brutally hard to untangle. The guys who know
how to call off frequency even just a little always end up getting through
quickly. Many of the big multi ops could use this lesson also. Brute force
does not always work the best in these situations. What a mess. Often I would
wait until the immediate flurry of callers sent their call first about .000001
seconds after my CQ (or TU) ended, and a weakish guy would drop his call in
quickly and make the QSO. The regular Caribbean ops have mastered both
techniques for working other zone 7/8 stations on difficult paths.
What an absolutely fantastic weekend working friends around the world. So cool
to have guys stop by and say hi to keep the spirits up.
Congratulations to Dan, N6MJ(sux), on his masterful performance from ZF1A. A
new claimed record, and from 2 point land....wow! Who will be his next
challenger?
As usual I did not watch the live scoreboard during the contest. But I see
after the fact that Dan and I were in a dead heat at 24 hours. I bet the back
and forth was pretty entertaining to watch!
