Comments:
The contest started off with wonderful openings on 10 and 15. Followed by a nice
middle east opening on 20, Then the sun decided to hit our ionosphere and
conditions dropped quite by Saturday afternoon and were worse on Sunday. The
European openings on Sunday made it to the Midwest and southern California but
Northern California! We stuck with it thru thick and thin and ended up with
slightly less Qs than last year. We had a few new ops who did a fine job filling
in when we needed them Thanks to John, NN6U and Randy, K8TR for taking shifts
late at night. The conditions on 10 meters were obviously better than last year
but suppressed by old Sol. On the second night we had continuous coverage on
160, 80, 40, 20, a rare occurrence. Great teamwork.
We also had significant line-noise which made life more difficult on several
bands...but we preserved! Yes, we put on the noise blanker, but as you know
with so many strong stations it renders copy difficult. Thanks to Ken, N6RO for
hosting the party. We all enjoyed the on-site conversations. Remote makes social
life tough. We had 7 ops in the shack and 2 remotes. Thanks to all the
contesters who called us or answered us.
160:
N6RO: First night, I listened on 160m often, but prop and powerline noise only
allowed about 9 Qs. Second night, got on 160 about 06z, CQing till 1420z, and
logging mostly USA. Prop still poor, but had spotlight calls from KP4 ZL and
HQ9, no other Carib, To my surprise, the usual 12z JA opening did not happen
until 14z, when managed 3 JAs.
80:
N6RO: Friday night, N6RO started on 80m, first Q was CN3A just before 02z., then
only a few Ws until 0500z the KO6M took over.
KO6M: 0500- 0830z. Dave racked up most of the Carib. and SA mults.
N6RO relieved Dave at 0830z, and soon after a great opening to Japan, 80 JAs,
plus 3W, HL, BV, BY, ZL... Band open until 1430z.
Second night, NN6U did the 80m work until dawn picking up several mults..
EU was not heard on 80m both nights.
40:
KK6PXT: Saturday: 0000-0500z all S&P no European runs. SA and Carib all OK.
WX5S 0500-1500z Nice opening to Japan and Far East.
WU6P: Sunday: 0000z to 0600z; early 40m operation, S&P only mostly, as not
to disturb the 15m running with hormonic interference. Rate is not high, and
propagation distance is limited. It only improves when get into midnight.
K8TR: 0600 to 1100z Good opening to Asia
WX5S: Finished the operation on 40 with a good oping to the Far East and
Oceania.
20:
Saturday
WD6T: 20m first night very good to zone 17,18,19 and Middle East. S79 also.
Not so much to Europe. JAs mostly busy on higher bands but then showed up.
K3EST: Nice opening to Japan and Oceania after 0600z Stations loud.
K6KM: 1400- 0000: Operated 20m on Saturday 14Z to 23:59. Mostly EU 90% S&P.
Took several calls to close many QSOs. Early afternoon tried to run some JA's
with only 3 of them showing up. Not much SA either. Running would yield lots of
zero-point contacts, but was contacted by 7Q7 Nice double multiplier.
Sunday:
WD6T: 0000-0600z: Second night poor conditions overall.
WU6P: Early morning to 19z: Not productive from 0830z to pre-sun rise, only have
single dignities QSOs. Around local sun rise, situation getting better, as the
path to South East Asia start to be open. When approach to noon time, EU started
to open.
KK6PXT:1900z to close. Lots of guys needing zone 3 (!). and band opened to SA
and Asia
15:
N6WM: Is always a pleasure to operate the Superbowl of amateur radio contests
from the fantastic N6RO station. Despite our handicap being an extra continent
away from EU multipliers, a few of us treat this as a full commit event. As the
15m operator we had a mixed bag.. Friday 00-04 was off the hook good, and
Saturday AM EU was fantastic filling the log with many needed zones and mults
and completing over a 15m dxcc by hour 16 of the contest. As Saturday progressed
it became obvious there was some solar activity causing issues.. and as we
rolled into Sunday it was clear conditions were not as good, but since the
beginning of the contest was so good, it ended op ok. 1074/35zones/119 countries
is a pretty good show.. was a pleasure to work with the team in particular Bob
K3EST to represent his call and Ken with the station. We have a bad power-line
noise which made life tough. We need to track down power company noise source
ASAP! Thanks all for the QSOsI
10:
K3EST: Nice opening to Asia from the starting bell. Ended up with 324 Qs by
0230z when the band closed. Saturday morning, the band was open to most of
Europe but signals didn’t allow running. Worked most of lower zone 14 and 15
and some zone 20 but not north of The Netherlands or scanty east zone 15. No
zone 16 on day one. The JAs were not as good Saturday evening reflecting the
solar activity. On Sunday, the band was much worse to Europe with very few
signals besides Spain and Portugal making it. Heard HB0A SV9 but no luck.
Managed to work Ukraine for zone 16 on scatter path off Africa. The usual west
coast Scandinavian opening at 2000z yielded OH and LN8W but nothing else. Heard
TF3T about S2 without good enough copy to call. Condx began to improve as the
contest drew to a close with JAs once again were runnable.
