Comments:

I don't know if it is old guy memory fade or what, but I don't recall a more
fun, higher rate, or stress free NAQP than this one. Wow I had a great time!
Plenty of rate and participation. Realtively easy to find a place to run. No
frequency fights. Friendly operators. True, the high bands never really opened
much, certainly not 10m, but it seemed unlike the typical situation they did not
open for anyone. Often the Northern lats or at least the east get shorted out of
the openings. I felt (dunno if true or not) that the playing field was more even
than usual.
Started by working 15m and calling 10m or S&P 20m on the 2nd radio to get
the mults when I could. Only 59 Q’s the first hour ,and I swapped to 20m as
primary S&P 15m. Took my only break at 20:50Z which in hindsight was at
least 30min too late. The rate was stinko for 30m before I jumped off, but it is
a hard choice to make so early. When I came back a bit after 22Z I hit 40m and
things were better with then next two hours at 120 rate. Moved to 20m primary
around 00Z for 1.5hrs and back to 40m. Over that 3hr period the rate was at
160…AWESOME. The last 3hrs averaged 88 rate dueling CQ and some S&P
40m/80m/160m. I did stay on the radio for about 30min too long, so some of the
mults I pulled in late don’t count. I took those Qout of my score summary.
I had been super pleased with the activity and rate and verbalized it when I
worked Marty, NN1C, on 80m at 0242Z. Suddenly the rated tanked for the next
30min! Not sure if Marty put the hex on me, or it was my mistake saying how much
I was enjoying some of the best rates ever for this contest. I will think twice
about that in the future :)
N1MM+ tells me I had a 420 1min, 264 10min, and 199 hour. The 420 minute was on
80m when I was ready to work someone calling there. They finished a QSO and
left. I took the freq and WOW…a crazy easy to work layered set of callers for
a while. I did have to make some tough band change decisions. Leaving a 10min
rate of 150+ to move down the bands before they go long to pick up mults is not
easy. I THINK I made some good calls on that. Nonetheless I had a great time. I
am thankful for the participation, the good natured operators, my health, and my
family for the time I could spend.
Oh…and a shout out to KE3YXT, Aaron, who just got his ticket, was on for this
contest, and worked me as his first QSO!!! Awesome to chat with him a bit and
welcome him to Vermont and HF radio. It is one of the highlights of the
contest.

73 es God Bless de KK1L, Ron <><
