Comments:

While studying the forecasts for 8 different hilltops for several days trying to
pick the best one, I realized that they were all equally bad. All locations had
a prediction of rain and snow. One of them in western FN22 had only a 30 percent
chance of precip versus 40 percent for most of the others, so I went with that
one. It was a site I'd never used before. This was going to be a roadside
operation on a moderate elevation hilltop whose best feature was the lack of
nearby trees rather than noteworthy elevation. The lack of power lines and my
recent addition of a second bandpass filter meant quiet receive. I got to the
hilltop 45 minutes early, but before I even got there, the wind driven snow/rain
mix was already pelting the windshield. I positioned the van on the edge of the
field since the road was too narrow, and operated on the loop for the first hour
while waiting for a break in the wx. Best DX on the loop was Maine station K1WHS
FN43 (254 mi / 409 km). Then the precip died down so I installed the 10-el rover
Yagi at 20+ feet. Best DX on the Yagi was the last contact of the evening before
the pre-planned shutdown around 10 PM--Virginia station K3SK FM07 (377 mi / 606
km). What a great way to end the event. This was a fun sprint with activity
coming in from all directions. There was a lot of CW activity (53 percent of my
QSOs). Running a little over 200w.
