Comments:
This contest was a lot of fun overall - it sure is great when 10
meters is open and we can all spread out - without that it is often
really really painful to do from west of the Mississippi. An added
benefit of solar activity is that we often get a good night time 20
meter opening to EU during and after their sunrise. And Sunday
morning was really great. Signals were strong and it really helped my
score. I am looking forward to a few more years with that opening.
The low bands were not great for me and that was the place I could
have used a few more multipliers. But at least they were pretty
quiet. I did get some sleep during the contest but only an hour or so
twice and then a few short 10-15 min things were I lie down and relax
and stretch out my body. Due to some rig issues I did not get a nap in
before the contest as I was dealing with replacing a broken radio with
a borrowed one that once I got it all in place was not switching my
2x6 band switch. So I ended up pulling it out and then pulling the
radio out of my remote station setup and then wiring it in place and
getting the configs correct etc. I did lay down for about 1.5 hours
but did not really get any good rest. That made the rest of the
weekend a struggle at times. But the conditions were so good.
Last month we had a pretty bad ice storm and my antennas are all still
a mess. One 20m antenna is broken and I do not think there is a
single 20m element that is not bent or twisted out of the plane with
the others in some way. Two lower 20m antennas have directors that are
at 45 degrees - place looks like crap - but I still seemed to get out
OK but I have a summer of replacing a lot of 20 meter elements.

One thing I have noticed over the last few years - and at first I did
not understand it - seems to be getting worse. We seem to have a
growing number of people on the air that seem to think that you have
to operate on some exact frequencies. This manifests in several ways.
- People call you way off frequency - .5 khz or more
- People ask you what frequency you are on.
- People ask you "why are you off frequency?"
I had all of the above.
And then I had one guy tell me that if I was on frequency I would do
better and get more answers. And I was like - what? How can I be off
frequency? His response was that I needed to be on .0 you know like
28.456.0 That being on 28.456.48 was wrong and I was "off frequency".
I only started out in this hobby in 1976 and I had a modern radio as a
first rig but the TS-520 only has marks very KHz - and then you have
to hope it is calibrated. I know these are all folks that are new to
the hobby and have grown up on very accurate and stable radios with
digital displays that show the frequency to at least two digits but
they need to be taught that we are not a channelized service - we can
use all the frequencies. Why limit yourself. I often do not pay any
attention to what my frequency is - I tune to the clear spot and use
that one. You only need to watch for the band edges. Spread the word
to any new hams (or even not so new) that we do not have to operate
one khz channels.
