Comments:

Unfortunately, this year I was unable to defend my last year #1 World SOA HP due
to last minute cancelled flight from KLM. Obviously, there was dispute between
the Airline and the Dutch Government short term introduced new COVID rules. And
in doubt the airline simply does not fly. Bad luck for a passenger like me.
But of course, I do not want to miss the contest on my favorite band. My
hometown club DA2X thankfully enabled me operating from there.
A 85 ft Vertical and some beverages promise some fun. But before the fun I had
to repair the JA beverage which was multiply broken due to recent storms.
Additionally, the South America beverage need to be enlarged to contest length.
On top of that there was some difficulties with the matching of the vertical
which could be resolved just right before contest. There was also the intention
to enlarge the USA beverage, but due the other activities and heavy snowing no
sufficient time left to produce the necessary supports for the 2-wire-type
beverage in this direction. A new single wire beverage certainly would have been
easier. Well, next time, that need to be prepared earlier.
Condx first night to USA was very disappointing. A longer beverage antenna would
have been beneficial. On top, DA2X is located in the very east part of Germany,
and that does not help not too much towards the US.
There was almost no come back of US stations to my CQ and the night ended with 8
S/P only. That was frustrating, but at least I worked all the usual Caribbean
Multipliers plus XE2X.
LU8DPM was audible very well, but it seemed he suffers from the summer noise
level in the southern hemisphere.
Next night’s propagation to NA was better, but not really good. Meanwhile I
expected a score disaster. But at sunrise – and that’s why a like 160m –
you never know – there was a great sunrise peak for roughly 15min. Suddenly
there was a big pileup from South West US, felt Worked all Texas / Arkansas
Award. NM and AZ came in easily. NA7TB was like a local! Incredible! Within
seconds new states came in. Finally, I got 34 S/P, which mad me a bit happier.
Far better propagation was to the Far East. JT BY, E2, VR2 incl. ZL plus 7 JA
made me satisfied. At Sunday evening suddenly 9G5FI appeared. Despite big chaos
he copied me at first attempt! That was great!
On the other hand there was plenty of stations completely unable to manage a
pile-up. They better should do S/P.
Last QSO was VO1HP which I missed the nights before. Some minutes before the end
he became audible and provided me the missing NF.
And the very last QSO could have been 4D2X at his local sunrise, he suddenly
became audible, but unfortunately, he did not hear me at the first attempts, and
you can imagine what happened the next last few minutes of the contest.
Despite all ups and downs, the contest was fun! I Hope next year I will be back
from P4 and benefit a little bit from the geography.

Mat DL4MM
