Greetings everyone... Hope you all enjoyed the 2 meter spring sprint.

From my qth this year,, it was quiet in all directions. No noise to cover up
the weak ones..
Which for once was great !!!
I decided to use my new Icom 9700 to see how well it works.
Plugged it into my legal limit tube amp, plugged into 4 x 18 element yagi at 70
feet. Why so much you ask ?
Out here in the corn fields of Iowa,, Not much of a population to work like it
is out east. So you have to really reach out to make contacts. I started out on
ssb,,, Signals from all directions were heard, but it seemed everyone was stuck
on the calling frequency. I saw action on FT8 so I moved there. Wow, lots of
close contacts that were easy copy on ssb were already on FT8. I didn't know how
long these stations would be around so I worked them as fast as possible. I kept
checking ssb just to see if new stations were heard. At one point I heard K9JK/R
up in EN62. He must of been on the move because his signal was very weak, but
completely readable.
I heard him working another station when his signal faded away, not to be heard
again until he reached EN51. I completed the contact with him and again in EN52.
As the night went on,, I think the band got better. I made FT8 contacts to Texas
EM04 and Oklahoma EM24. Plus some contacts in Kentucky and Tenn. When I pointed
North towards Minn. where I have the most noise, there wasn't any noise. Worked
several stations up north all the way up to K0AWU in EN37 on ssb. I was
thinking, golly gee wiz,, wish it would be like this during the June or July VHF
contest. I got to talking to Bob,K2DRH about how it was going, he said he hadn't
had supper yet and a cheese burger sounded good. That's all it took for me who
also hadn't had supper yet to go cook me up a cheese burger. While I was eating
my freshly grilled cheese burger, I listened to Bob work several other stations.
Once I was done eating I started back up switching between ssb and FT8. I guess
I missed several part timers who only got on to say hi then bye. The wife let me
know the 10 o'clock news was coming on so I went off to watch it. After the news
was over I came back for the last 30 minutes. Not a lot still on the band around
here I hadn't already worked. The few left I heard were on FT8. I did a lot
better than I thought I would do. My goal was to make 35 contacts. Now I'm
hoping the 222 spring sprint is just as good with little to no noise. I will
have WSJT available on 222 so if anyone wants to make a MSK144 sked a head of
time, please let me know.. 73, Daniel EN41 Iowa
