Comments:
I set a goal of making at least 200 QSOs in 10 hours for this contest. Mission
accomplished. The stretch goal was for 400, but band conditions pretty much put
that out of reach.
My developing antenna system consists of the GAP Titan DX that I've been using
all along and the newly installed home brewed EFHW 8040 in a low inverted L
configuration. The GAP is resonant on 20m and 10m, very good on 15m and 40m, and
the capacitor for 80m is the one for the top of the band. The EFHW 8040 is
currently tuned for best SWR between 3628 and 3688. Between the two, the worst
SWR on the band is 2.1:1 at around 3800. 40m has a similar situation where the
best antenna for the band depends on if you're higher or lower than 7230. I had
mapped out the SWR plots and knew where I needed to change antennas. Needless to
say, though, I was immensely better off to compete on 80m for this contest than
previously. Signal and audio reports from everywhere were favorable for the
EFHW. This matches the results I observed during Field Day 2019 on a similar
version of the one I used for NAQP.
Despite the challenging band conditions, I had a blast with NAQP this year. I
pretty much followed the strategy we discussed at the PVRC meeting last week,
but I should have switched to park & bark (running) sooner in the evening. I
had higher rates with S&P than P&B earlier in the day (prior to and just
after sunset), but the last 90-120 minutes of operation was spent running on 80m
(I found a quiet spot halfway between K3AJ and WX3B) and rates were excellent
for a significant part of that time. I was pretty sure I wouldn't make my goal
before that switch, but a couple of runs totaling 50 Qs brought me across the
line.
I heard a lot of PVRCers and SMCers on the bands and lots of good-natured
competition and camaraderie. Gotta love this hobby. :)
