NE2V:
First 24 hours was productive with good rates, especially on 20 and 15. Mults
were not as plentiful, but conditions on the low bands were better than
expected.
N2WKS:
ARRL DX CW is my favorite contest and this year was a great example of why.
With 100 watts we could run and work dx all weekend and everyone was pointing
at the US and listening for us.
I arrived at 00:12z day 2 after Justin had made 1084Q. I could see on the live
score that W1NY was ahead of us. I configured score reporting so we would
publish and started working frantically at their lead. I tried to run on 40
but was only getting about 1 q a minute so I started cleaning off the band map
and picking up mults on 20, 80 and 160 (about 13 in that hour). Next hour I
tried running on 40 again with limited success and picked up another 10 mostly
Caribbean mults but I was surprised to break piles on 160 with low power and it
was nice to hear my friends John p40w, Alan v26m, and other familiar calls like
vp9/w6ph with a huge 160 signal. At this point I started DXing and picked up
another 14 mults and some Qs mostly on 80 and 160 with a couple on 40. I was
really happy that people were hearing me on 80 and were not cqing in my face
like some years past. 03z I jumped back to 40 to call KL7RA and I think I got
a hi Zev from Steve. I tried to run again on 40 and then gave up and went back
to s/p and got a Hi Zev from Fred KH7M after he busted my call a few times on 40
(I may have been facing EU). I jumped around picked up another 9 mults. At 04z
I saw 160 was open and picked up 14 more mults including a bunch of Europeans
on 160 and 4z4kx and a loud 9h1xt on 80 (I couldn't even hear the group at 9H6A
in CQWW). 05z I ran a bit on 80 but only a few response so swept up 9 more
mults.
At this point I noticed that W1NY was sleeping and I was making significant
gains on catching up. The rest of the night was sludging through the doldrums
and trying to stay motivated with the high points of getting a Hi Zev from my
friends Dale and Jorge at CW5W on 80 and working KH7M on 160 and KL7RA on 80.
A few juicy pacific mults made the log on 40 (kh2, a31, 3d2, E5, VP6) but only
one of the loud JAs heard me. I could hear JA3YBK on 80 but didn't try calling
since he was just audible and now that I know AA1K didn't work them I don't feel
so bad. I thought I worked the E5 on 80 but I think that he showed up after I
jumped to 20 at 11z. At this point I was dead even with W1NY on QSOs and about
5 mults ahead.
At 11z I started to see spots on 20 and EA1CBX was the first to hear me
followed by 4U1ITU, and SV2DSJ. I called cq on 14024 and proceeded to work 200
stations over the next 2.5 hours. At 13:39 I jumped to 15 and picked up some
mults and ran 52 stations at about 1/min. I then swept the band map on 20 and
back to 15 where I swept the band map until I found 21011.7 open at 15:50z and
had a nice 74q run. HI3Y decided to CQ on top of me and probably didn't know I
was there until I pointed the beam south and asked him to qsy up....this is the
trouble with Low power...even if you can run, it is hard to keep the frequency
clear. At this point I heard that 10 was open and went to grab a few mults to
find poor conditions and only picked up pj2t and 5j0na not hearing much else
that Justin hadn't worked on day 1. I did hear my dad and W2IRT trying to work
a loud HK1MW but the pileup was to big and I gave up. I chased down Buro MU0FAL
on 15 and then jumped around a bit and tried to run on 15 but didn't get much
going until 1840 when I found a clear spot on 14025.7 and managed about 60q.
At 19:50 I hopped back on 15 and picked up E51, OX3XR, ZM1A and few others but
not enough to stay. I saw some spots on 40 and was surprised to be able to
work stations one call so I tried running on 7056 and it was slow but when
EA1AER called in with 5 watts I knew conditions were there just not enough
activity. Jay came down and I took a 30 min break to eat dinner. The end of
the contest is always hard for me as the pileups on 15 and 20 for mults are
bedlam and with low power, that can be fruitless. I did manage 4 mults
including the BG2AE on 20 in the last hour but was basically hunting for every
Q I could. At this point we had a healthy 200 Q and 30 mult lead over W1NY but
didn't catch our 2015 score. In the end I had a lot of fun and most of the time
it didn't even feel like we were running low power. It was nice to hear my
friends and so many familiar calls from around the world.
The live score and W1NY added an extra level of excitement to the weekend,
congrats on the nice score and solid low power effort.
Thank you to everyone who called in and traveled to dx location to give us
people to work. Also big thank you to Jay for hosting us and bringing me
coffee and breakfast and to his lovely wife Judy who still doesn't get why we
enjoy this crazy hobby :-)
Despite all my efforts and more time in the chair, Justin managed to beat my Q
total by 44 qsos....nice job.
This year John W2GD came over to fix the broken balun to driven element wires
on the 40 meter beam...this is the second time that has broken and it is very
hard to get to. We also worked hard to fix the 2 element 80 meter vertical
array to correctly use the ON4UN feed method and not get flooded...and ground
mounted the feed-point of one of the verticals and put down about 30
radials....it seemed to play well although the inverted V is still useful to
the south. When I went to walk the NE beverage before the contest I noticed a
bear or deer had walked into one of the remaining elevated radials and ripped
it out of the insulator. We also added a Green Heron controller so the Alt J
was useful and it worked well.
Side note: At some point I hit some combination of keys on the K3 which turned
off the headphones in my right ear. I believe it started with hitting the
A->B button while in TX followed by a bunch of other buttons to try to get
the rig out of TX since it seemed locked. Shutting down the rig did not fix
this and I managed to find a config setting for speakers with a setting of 1
which I changed to 2 and that fixed it.
