Comments:

My mission in the 160 meter contests is to work my brothers. No matter where I
am I will throw up some kind of compromise antenna and try to emit enough of a
signal to be heard. This year's antenna was a commercial 80/160 short dipole
hung from our flagpole here in a deed-restricted community. The center was 20
feet above ground and the ends were 6 feet high and bent around plastic fence
posts. My K3 could barely tune the SWR to about 3.0:1. Turns out that this
was the second-worst antenna I have tried here in The Villages, second to an
indoor wire the first year I moved here. I tried calling Peter (K3ZM) off and
on for a few hours before giving up and going to bed. I awoke at 2:40 AM local
time and decided to give him one more shot. Hooray! After a QRZ, he realized
that that puny-weak signal was, once again, his brother, and I made it into his
log. Sadly, although I also called Jeff (VY2ZM) many times, my signal just
couldn't make it all the way to PEI. I also failed to get through to my
friends at the W2GD superstation. I will definitely try a different antenna
next time.
