Comments:
Last weekend I stapled 23 short radials into the lawn area of my small suburban
back yard. My shunt-fed tower never had any radials before. Well, it really
made a big improvement; the RBN CW Skimmer spots (http://reversebeacon.net)
show that I was getting out just as well as the other big guns out here.
The trouble is, even with a pair of small Rx loops, I wasn't hearing very well.
Saturday afternoon I woke up with the idea that I could string a "VE3DO loop"
along the back of my small suburban lot, using existing materials already on
hand, including the transformer and terminating resistor from an old EWE
antenna that had been removed years ago.
A few hours later, the 40' long, 10' high VE3DO loop was in place, and it was
definitely hearing the East Coast better than any of my other Rx antennas. Too
bad I didn't have it up the first night, since activity dropped off so
dramatically the second night.
Missed DC, SC, VE5, and VP6 (never heard), but worked several other rare ones
(for me) including HK0/m, BY, YB0, and 9M2. Details below.
