Thanks for all the participation! With the SFI at 140 and quiet conditions for
the weekend, this was very different than the last six years of Round-Up. Not
as spectacular as WW RTTY last fall when the SFI peaked at 193 and the MUF was
so high that 20m blacked out during the day. This was a little more balanced
between the high and low bands.
My peak QSO rates were down from the past, especially in the first four hours,
but the average of 146 for the 24 hours is a personal best (previously 135,
last year). I started on 15/20 and worked down as the 15, then 20, rate
dropped. That's also how I decide my time-off, and it came at 0630z, about the
median time over the last seven Round-Ups. I started up again at 1146z when 10
was runnable to Europe. That left 44 minutes for a second break, in case of
station problems, which I almost needed on two occasions! Thus, my 24 hours
was up at 2314z. That was fortunate because the last three hours were
relatively slow.
Didn't use 10 until Sunday when the entire 11.5 hours was spent on 10 and 15
only, with 800+ QSOs on each band. The JAs were excited to be working P4 on 10
and 15 RTTY Sunday afternoon (Monday morning in Japan.) In fact, when a JA
would move from 15 to 10 for me, they were often louder on 10.
I'm still down in mults, though, and need to work on that. The plan was to
tune each run band on the second receiver. I set up SO4V (SO2V on two radios)
for this purpose and it works superbly well on RTTY with a decoder window on
the second receiver. WriteLog integrates the K3 nicely in this configuration.
However, I need a lot more practice to use it effectively at these run rates. I
actually found new mults, but didn't get them worked before they QSY'd, due to
being fully occupied serving callers on the two run receivers.
I brought P3 bandscopes down with the K3s and it was well worth it for getting
a sense of band activity and signal levels, plus where to operate. They were
instrumental in making SO4V work effectively as each signal on the waterfall
could be examined with the second receiver decoder window.
At one point Sunday afternoon, it seemed that 15 was dropping off while 10 was
still strong. I jumped the 15 radio to 20 between QSOs for a peak at what that
band looked like and 20 was hopping with strong activity. But, back on 15 it
looked dead ... well is was dead, locally, because something was open in the
feedline. I suspect the 15m position on that side of the SixPak, but haven't
diagnosed it yet. We had probems on that port last Setember. I swapped radios
between 10 and 15 while maintaining the runs, so I didn't have to take a break.
Then, an hour or so later one of my Writelog computers froze up and again I
avoided a break by continuing to run on 15 while pulling the battery and power
cord from the frozen computer to get it going again.
Thanks again to everyone for the contacts. There were 29 five-banders and many
people moved between 10<-->15 on Sunday for me, to keep the rate up. I'll get
the pre-contest log on LotW today and the contest log will go up after the
deadline. Thanks also to John and Andy for sharing their cottage station with
me.
