Comments:

A new 6 element beam at 110 feet really helped out when conditions were
marginal (most of the time!!!) It is on a separate tower from the 5 element at
48 feet. I could feed them together or only the high beam. The noise figure
on the high beam is about 15 Db lower so I could often copy weak stations on it
that I couldn't even hear on the low beam.
Saturday conditions to Europe were really poor and the band opening was only
about an hour long except for the guys with big antennas. Sunday there was a
short peak about 20 minutes long when I was able to get a small run going with
a rate of about 140. It is really hard to do much into Europe from here even
when the band is open since the east coast stations are 20 - 40 over. The high
beam helped here some, too.
A particular problem I have here (near the Mexican border) is from Mexican
CBers who use amateur gear to operate in the lower part of ten on SSB. Some of
them have high power linears and they really overmodulate. The CB SSB signals
sometimes drown out the US stations at 30-50 over S-9. Some of the CB signals
splatter across the entire band. Sometimes I could drive them off by pointing
the low beam south and calling CQ.
The best part of the contest was when PY0FF called me in the last minute for a
new mult. I got all states and all but VO2 and VE8 from Canada but the DX was
really lacking with only 77 countries worked. Best DX was VQ9.
I've got to have some neck surgery done but hope to be recovered enough by the
ARRL DX tests to get back on.
73 and thanks for all the contacts.
