WRTC Resume For

K1KI

2002 WRTC application
Tom Frenaye, K1KI

Doing well in the WRTC competition requires an operator who can perform at the top levels of HF contesting, but one who can also work closely with a team member to produce a winning score, in addition to being a person who can be a good ambassador for the country he or she represents.

Given that, I submit a brief summary of my qualifications:

1) Contest results

My operating during the past several years has primarily been in the multi-operator category, with significant scores in CQWW, ARRL DX, and IARU HF contests, and regular participation in the NCJ CW Sprint contests.

As a multi-op my station has usually been in the top third of all entries, though sometimes undermanned. Our efforts have usually been aimed to maximize our club score (YCCC), rather than to maximize our overall score. As such, we have usually run M/M with 5-7 operators, concentrating mostly on CW events, often winning the "points per operator" battle, but not challenging the 10-15 person crews at KC1XX, W3LPL or K3LR. During the last two years (claimed totals for 2000) we have won the CQWW CW multi-single category for the USA.

In the NCJ CW Sprint contests, I have nearly always finished in the top ten USA, often with the top score in the eastern USA, and had one #1 finish in February 1999.

I wouldn't have submitted this application without a serious single op effort in a recent major contest. In last weekend's contest I completed my first serious single op WPX CW entry with a claimed score of 7.96m points, just behind K5ZD and just ahead of KQ2M, K1TO and K1ZZ.

2) Teamwork

I do have some experience in WRTC competitions. In 1996 I teamed up with K3UA where we operated as W6D from San Francisco. We ended up 7th overall (6th USA). In WRTC 2000 in Slovenia I participated as a judge at the S522R (Argentine) station.

The past five years have seen around 20 different multi-op efforts from my QTH, each one averaging around 10m points. In addition to multi-multi and multi-single efforts, I have organized and hosted W1AW and NU1AW multi-op headquarters efforts during the IARU HF Championships - one included an eight station effort.

During the multi-ops hosted here, my participation is usually as the "jack of all trades". I'm usually the one to do most of the station and computer set-up, and resolve station problems. I share in some of the prime running time, but prefer to be the one chasing multipliers and QSOs on the second or multiplier station, often doing most of the packet spotting to help other club members (or whoever is connected to packet).

3) Ambassador

I'll let my efforts as a past YCCC president and continuing participant in club activities, and my long involvement working for ARRL as a volunteer on the Board, speak for itself. That effort is better judged by those doing the candidate selection.

Thanks for your consideration! Good luck with the very tough selection job.
