I use a bencher and a logikeyer.Its the best set up I have found so far as a causal cw operator in the 17 to 20wpm range.

In Radioman "A" school I was taught on a straight key. I have never been able to
adapt from an up and down motion to a side
to side one. I use the paddles ONLY to
program a memory keyer. All QSOs are made
with a straight key. Just can get the hang
of paddles no matter how much I try!!

After years of inactivity, I bought a rig and paddles this year. Having used a straight key (occasionally a bug many years ago), after much practice I can send OK with the paddles. However I still can't copy as fast as I can send, unlike the header comment surmises for this survey. P.S. how do I keep my bencher paddles from jumping off the bearing and sending continuous dots or dashes?

I'm left-handed, and learned to use a borrowed single-lever electronic keyer in the late 1950's, so I learned backwards -- dots on my index finger, dashes on my thumb. I've always blamed this for my accuracy problems. Recently, though, I started using the built-in paddle keyer capability in TR Log, and find my accuracy has improved markedly. Now I suspect there's something in the timing of some keyers that is more forgiving than others...

When I started doing contests I sent everything with the computer during the tests but lately I've started to send almost everything with the paddles. I find it more fun to send myself but when I do contests SO2R I use the computer to send. It gets to much to control two radios, a computer and the paddles on the same time...

Started with my J-38 Knee Key in 1958, then screwed my J-38 to the desk. Next in 1960 (High School Grad present) was my Vibroplex Presentation. Then an Eico tube keyer (kit) with a Brown Bros paddle. Still have em all plus 2 more Brown Bros paddles and an AEA MM3. CW is just another language. Helps to learn it when you are 12 and there is nobody to tell you it's hard to learn. My favorite key is my Brown Bros combo paddle/straight key.... C U in the Piles! Art

I learned to use a J-38, Vibroplex Champion, Bencher BY-1 and finally a Brass Racer. In the transition from J-38 to bug, I had to learn to be right handed as I was left handed with the J-38. 20 or so years with the Bencher I developed the skill but never could find a single adjustment that I liked all the time. The Brass Racer was a one time "set and forget" for me and I like it the best. I'm considering adding another bug to the shack. I'll bet I can still use it and do a creditable job with a bit of refamiliarization. I have used my K-3 for calling CQ but I prefer to handle contest exchanges the old fashioned way. CW forever!

I try to avoid paddles as much as I can..I MUCH prefer a small 3 to 5 hp outboard on my canoe......oh, we're not talking water sports??? In that case, never mind. (HI HI)

Paddles are the way to go. Some how it just doesn't feel the same
And if you have a great key, that makes it more fun.
Take a look at a key I have designed for ops who like the best
at http://www.cwforever.com. I have a Patent pending on this key.

Computers have made me lazy!! I only operate CW during contest
so hitting F5 and F3 is about all the sending I do - Hi Hi.
I do have a Brown Bros paddles that is behind the rotor control box
in case I have to re-program the memories in the rig (TS-850S).
I enjoyed using paddles in the 70/80 but I am a mostly on rtty and
find that outside of the contest or DX'ing that cw is too slow compared
to rtty.

I use my paddles for everything in a contest except CQing, or unless I just can't seem to send up to par. I prefer to use the paddles...it's more fun. Plus if someone asks for a fill, you can send it easily without fumbling. BUT if for some reason I can't seem to send right, there's no reason to hurt the score by being a lid. :) That's when I end up using the keyboard.

Usually more probs on RX than TX here. Only paddle probs are usually when I have to quickly jump from keyboard sending and stretch over to paddle to send extra info manually.
