Contest Start
|

I've been licensed since 1959, and have always been a DXer with a modest station. Then I realized I could work lots of DX in DX contests. Started contesting seriously in 1991 and my first at a superstation was CQWW SSB M/S at K8CC in 1997. Now I'm doing CQWW CW at PJ2T in 2001 and 2002. What a rush!

Novice contesting

I got my first taste of contesting at FD, but really got into it on the 1981 Ten meter contest. I did make a few contacts in the November SS in 81, but made over 100 during the 10 meter test as KA0IFG/N. Also ran the novice roundup, and single handedly ran the novice station at FD the next year. Those were greats times-CW only, mainly on 15 and 10 meters. The later phone novices and no- codes techs don't know what they are missing
Took me a while longer to get into VHF contest, but have been doing that seriously since 1992. Those are always fun, and taking a grid expeditions is usually a little cheaper than a dxpedition.

Can't remember

I know the first contest I was ever exposed to was a Field Day exercise run by a local club. This was before the "Novice/Tech" station (or GOTA is it now?) and I was a bit too intimidated (and no one invitied me) to try to operate, so I just watched. Looked like fun.
Sometime later I found myself in the Novice Roundups, Sweepstakes, 10m contest. Surely I read about some of them in QST first, but damned if I can remember...
One thing's for certain, I really had no contesting Elmer, I just took it upon myself to jump in!

Waiting for traffic net

It was 1970 (I think) when I was patiently waiting for 8RN to start on 3530 when I heard all these familiar calls sending "CQ CD." I had the appointment (ORS) so I jumped in.
About a year before that I worked G2RO in the CQ WW on 80m while waiting for 8RN, but had no idea that it was a contest (or even what a contest was).
Those days are long gone. Field day seems like be the best hook nowadays.

This first day as a Ham.
|
As patiently as I could wait, I got my Novice license during the 1979 Novice Roundup. Helped get the CW speed up.
The first contest QSO was made between the big international brodcasters on 40 meters late the first night I had the license. I made around 6 QSO's for the contest.
My first serious effort was during the 1979 ARRL 10 Meter still as a Novice on CW. You didn't have phone privledges then. Had a ball, although I finished second.
Enjoy jumping in on a contest today.
Never serious enough to win one. Did take a ARRL November Sweepstakes CW QRP in 1994.

Contest Bug

My first contest was FD, but the flame was fanned by CD parties and PA QSO party!
I remember my very first FD, operating on 6 meter AM with a Heathkit Pawnee(or was it Shawnee?), about 8 watts. The band opened to New Mexico, Arizona, & Utah (from PA) and I was hooked!

Though I had been to the Central Michigan ARC FD in June, '57, my license didn't arrive until August. So my first contest was the Novice Roundup. Oh, how I miss the younger years where sleep was used to fill the hours where was nothing to do and not a requirement to function.

Working DX

I got fed-up with the lack of fun I was having as a no-code Technician and got my 20 wpm code with the associated HF privileges with the sole intent to work DX on phone. I entered the CQ WW SSB in 1996 to work a few new DX stations and got bit hard by the bug. The following year I *discovered* CW contesting in the WPX CW...now CW contests are my primary operating activity when I get time. CU in Dayton and WPX.

The Contest Bug

The 1986 Novice Roundup was my first contest. Yikes, 37 QSOs!!!! I did it with a straight key ... and with a paper log...plus I was 10 yrs old at the time....are those enough excuses??? hihi....
