I just bought a Japan Radio JST-245 from Universal Radio.
The JST-245 has a built-in power supply and antenna tuner, which greatly reduce clutter in the shack. With the optional SSB filters and speech compression, it did very well in the past weekend's CQ WW DX contest. It's 150 watts got out well (with a Heil HM-10-5 mike). The tuner easily tuned up on 80, 40, 15 and 10 with my Carolina Windom 80.
As the QST reviewers noted (12/95), the JST-245 is very satisfying to use. It has excellent audio, and the controls are handy. It does not have DSP circuitry, however, which may be a problem for some (not for me.)
If you don't operate multi-multi, and don't care to monitor dual signals in your stereo headphones, I'd recommend taking a look at it as a straighforward, efficient and compact contest transceiver. (Universal offers a 15-day trial with a re-stocking fee.)
According to K8CC, his NA contest software accomodates the JST-245, which is a plus. However, no regular logging programs that I am aware of accomodate the 245.
The JST-245 is replacing a (used) Omni-VI (Option 2) I've been using. Although I've enjoyed the Omni VI, and view it as a good value, the extra bucks for the new JST-245 are worth it. I will post a review of the JST-245 once some months of operating have gone by.

The FT-1000D is tough to beat. I beat it every session and it
still works Superbly. DSP nawwwh. Waiting for the real
IF derived DSP, not Audio!!. Long live Yaesu.

I bought a new FT1000MP Mark V last year, but I still like the used Icom IC781. No DSP on board, but the receiver is very good.

This survey reflects my curiosity about what contesters are buying, from among the current crop of products. Is the contesters' choice the MARK V, the '756PRO, or the Omni VI+? Or, were the close-out bargains for the 1000MP & TS950 more appealing?
MY newest transceiver? A PIEXX equipped TS930. Old but still a solid performer.

Oldie but goodie

I have an IC 781 that I purchased used from Gerry, W6TER several years ago. I think that it was used when Gerry bought it, so this unit is at least third-hand.
This is the best radio I ever had, bar none. I just had it refurbished by Randy, KK7TV who replaced the electrolytics, put in pin diodes and did a complete alignment. (Randy does a great job on repairs.)
Although this radio does not use the latest technology, and does not have built in DSP, is has a phenomenal receiver. Additionall, it is fully automated in the stn with an IC4KL linear and an Icom EX-627 automatic antenna switch, all of which gives me instant band & antenna changing. I also use a Top Ten Devices Band Decoder to automatically switch an ICE 419 bandpass filter. Additionally, radio control from Write Log, CT and NA has always worked flawlessly with this radio.
I am sticking for now with my oldie but goodie 781.

I had to check "Other", as I have purchased new Kenwood, Yaesu, and Icom radios for contesting and non-contesting within the past two years. I'm still waiting for an Icom IC-781MKII however. 73 Clinton AB7RG
