Timing and mode

First, the ARRL SSB weekend is jammed up against the CW weekend--it's only two weeks later. Family life prevents two major contest commitments two weeks apart. It would be better if the League moved the SSB weekend to, say, August. :-) --73, Rus, K2UA

Just played around some hours from home station with low power and 4ele. Had a good run on 10m with 110 QSO/hour! That was great fun with low power and the bad take off i have from home. Looking forward for WPX-SSB! Then again from contest QTH on a hiltop and better antennas and power! Thanks everyone for nice Qs and see you in WPX with DF0RI. 73 de Bud, DK3DM

Only managed 24 hours in the shack - good propagation on 40/20/15/10, but 160m was terrible. In ARRL CW made 92 QSOs on 160m - on SSB only 2 QSOs ! A few states/provinces never heard on any band. 73 Chris GM3WOJ/GM7V

In the past I'd run for a while, get run off
the frequency, scrape around and find a
frequency (never as good as the one held as
the band opened!), then repeat the process.
I still did this during the past weekend, but
about 1/5 as much. The result was a lot more
running and a lot less tuning around, looking
for a clear frequency. Maybe it was luck, but
I think it was *immediately* stopping what I
was doing and explaining to the guy firing up
1khz above or below me that I've been on the
frequency for a long time, etc. If this isn't
done *immediately* I could check my watch and
figure on being in S&P mode in a few minutes.

Great weekend
|
I must admit that I was some what disappointed because I didn't have the time to finish the repairs in the linear, so I decided not to operate at all since 80 meters was my target this year; but Friday, since the XYL was not going to be at home during the weekend, I decided to give it a try of working 20 meters Low Power, and man was I for a big surprise, I ended up with 1,544 valid QSOs, 58 states/provinces and 268,656 points, and worked the WAS in one weekend. It was more that what I expected from only 100 watts, and it was a lot of fun to have to fight with the KWs to be able to remain in one frequency. What a fun weekend. Thanks every one for being there. By the way, two of the US hams that also posted their comments, N2GA and NM2G are in my log. Hope to see you all during the WPX.

Saturday propagation was unbelievable! I'm not a big gun, but worked numerous 59 005 contacts, all very readable! But the lack of any antennas below 40 meters and the lack of time in the chair made submitting my log just a formality. Of course, I was thrilled to make P29CC my first contact in the log!

I selected other because I think that it is time in the chair that dictates how well you do (all other things being equal). I had fun in the 12 or so hours I operated. Conditions did not seems as good as in the CW portion. I wish I had better antennas for 80 & 160. Hope to see everyone in WPX SSB as WV2LI.

Incredible propagation on 10 metres from Nova Scotia to Europe and South America all weekend, well into the evenings (got 108 countries)...Then 40 opened up in the evenings...Great contest, lots of fun...can't wait until WPX!!. 73, Scott, VE1OP

Well, what would you call it to use a symmetrical fed indoor dipole in my down-town flat in central Linz running 100W - and! - using SSB ;-) I spent some points and hey - it was fun. Guess next year condx will worsen. So I simply had to try SOLPSB (10m) 2001 :-) Vy 73 de Oliver...

Propagation 10 meters

The whole east coast from northern Florida
through the Maritimes and as far west as
a line from western NY down through NC was
completely cut off from VP9. I eked out a
couple multipliers by moving or listening
for stations from 15 m. If I had brought some wire for a 160 meter antenna, I would have made up for this deficit. Used TS930+
Piexx for quick QSYs and AV5/R6000 antennas
I entertained all requests for QSYs, a lot
of fun. 2.1 Meg SOAB Low Power.

Resurrection
|
After a, more or less, 5 year absolute black-out, we reactivate,and of course not just-in-time, the IU2M station at our radio club in Milan. It has been a great deal, anyway!
No antenna yet on 80 and 160 (will be ready for WPX), a feedline burnt out early sunday, that left us without the TX7DXX for almost two hours! Just one radio and a lot of willingness, to say "we are back on again.."

Prop Killed Me

Since I had so much fun running the CW side of the house as a QRP station thought the SSB would be as much fun. Not so, the propagation and low power added up to an incredible 180 Q's!
What was funny though was I was so loud on 15 the first night that guys almost sounded incredulous. They did not see me yelling into the mike trying to make Q's on 20.
Oh well, I will lick my wounds and look forward to the M/M at KL7RA for the WPX.

I wonder what "Other" excuses there are? Family commitments? Illness? Hate phone too much: only operated for the club score?
I selected "Equipment" because all I have up is an A3 on a rope about 7m up a tree (fixed at Europe) and a pair of inv-Vees for 40/80 up about 15m - different tree!
If this were asked next year, 2001's summer tower project would force me to pick "Operator skill". :)

Used WriteLog contest logging program to huge advantage as it shows me stations worked, stations needed and new multipliers. Unfortunately couldn't get the computer cable to get the IC-756 and software talking so spent the weekend frantically spinning the vfo up and down the band. All in all, my best performance yet as single op assisted.
