AM I ONLY ONE?
|
AM I the only one using a TS-870? I like
it but maybe I would like something else
better? I have a TS-940 with cascaded
500 hz filters but still favor the TS-870
for some reason. Bill WS4Y

TS 850 is the best
|
More than 7 years I am using the radio on CW and SSB contest and can compare only with some Icoms previously used. I am very happy of the 850.

CW contest rigs
|
Currently I use a ICOM 737 as my main rig for CW and it does OK, but my Ten Tec Corsair blows it away it terms of QSK. I had an OMNI VI for seven years and it was awesome as well. I've played with the Kenwood 850 and it seems to do well.
I'd like to sit down with a 756 PRO or Mark V and try one of those out.

TS-850

I've used many of the radios listed in
the survey and the TS-850 has always been
my favorite.

TS950SDX
|
I bought mine new in wayback when and despite trying out several later radio's the 950SDX with 500Hz Filters takes the biscuit particularly on LF and large antennas.

TS 430-s
|
My TS430-s,
i am so happy with this old, but very
good trvc and there is no reason to by
another one. It is not the tranceiver but
the spirit to do so.

Good Op > Good Radio
|
With my FT-920 and home modifications to cascade INRAD filters, 300' longwire and only wire antennas I did 1.24meg in ARRL CW!
You don't need an MP to place....

FT1KMP
|
Have been using various radios in contests past years, but FT1000MP seems for me as best choice. For DX-ing great too.

Looking es wishing
|
Been using an Icom 751A for many years. It's
great, but my hearing isn't, so I'm dreaming
abt a new rig with a great IF DSP receiver.
Anyone want to give me an opinion/report on
the Icom 746 direct at: [email protected]?

Contest Radio
|
I like the Icom IC-781 and the IC-765. I have also used the Yaesu FT-1000D and MP and think they are pretty good too but I don't like the computer interface troubles I've experienced with them.
A better question asked should have been what manufacturer and then what model radio folks are using for us to get a clearer picture of which rigs are the most popular choices.

Long Live the TS850
|
I've been a SSB contester most of my life, and love my 850. I op'd this past ARRL DX CW and the 850 did a fantastic job; even for someone like me without great CW ears. The rig is easy to use and all the controls are easy to get to (except vox controls).

CW radios
|
To mix all models of some brands with specific models of other brands produces survey results without statistical validity. It should have first been brand alone, then models of the top two brands the next week. My primary is a Kenwood '930 w/ PIEXX; my FD/portable radio is a Ten-Tec Argosy.

What about my other radio?
|
I use a TS-850S with 400-Hz Inrad filters, and an FT-1000MP with Inrad filters. This has proven to be an excellent combination for SO2R CW contesting!

No TS930 category??
|
I would have thought that given the TS940 category, there musht be shome mishtake, it ought to have been TS930, which seems to be well respected by CW ops world-wide. The Voodoo guys use a few. I use a 940 anyway, but it's beginning to show signs of age. Just like me. I like the 850, when I've used it. Don't like the FT1000MP for some reason.

Kenwoods
|
My TS-940S plays very well, and with the 599Zx... Even better. I used my TS-440S many years before obtaining my 940. Both great rigs.
Ya gotta make do with what 'cha got. Would love one of the new MP's or D's, But, with the 3Ele@30' w/100W handicap, I may not score BIG, but I do have FUN.

TS-850
|
I love my TS-850. Especially on CW. This past ARRL DX CW test, I bagged 48 countries in about 10 hours of casual operation on 40 meters only, with a Carolina Windom (a wire antenna) up at only 30 feet.
It's a great CW contesting rig which interfaces well with CT also.

CW rigs

I find this particular survey rather interesting. I think the intent is to group certain
radios in categories that are prone to key clicks and other flaws. Just my guess.

TS-850
|
I operate some SSB and I can say that the TS-850
is a very fine SSB radio. If you like the 930 on SSB you
will be very happy with the 850. I also find the receiver
to be quieter that the 930.
The TS-850 seems to be a fine CW radio as well - I really
like it - I have two.

Good or bad .... ?
|
How many tried the rigs running parallel
for having comparable conditions ?
THIS would give realistic estimates,if that ever would be possible because of the different point of views (DX, Contest, CW, SSB, normal or worse band conditions /antennas). But the biggest problem is that 99 % of (proud) owners of a
"super de luxe " 6000 bucks rig never would be so honest to themselves that their expensive rig is just a big bullsh... !
I am running older TenTec`s and JST and found nothing new what justified the triple price and giving so less of additional profit

contest rigs

A rather slanted survey. The 1000mp, MkV, and D are lumped together, yet the Kenwoods and Icoms are broken up. Have you ever had a statistics class?

ICOM 756 PRO
|
CONTESTING WITH THE PRO IS AN ABSOLUTE JOY. I DON'T PLAN TO WIN ANY OF THE CQWW'S DX CONTEST, BUT I SURE PUT UP A RESPECTABLE SCORE. I ALSO OWN AN ICOM 761, BUT ITS NO COMPARISON....ITS PRO ALL THE WAY....DEFINETLY MORE VALUE FOR YOUR BUCK THAN THE MP OR MARK V....AT LEAST IN MY BOOK IT IS... K8LY

Better by manufacturer
|
A bit strange to compare some very old to new transceivers or selected models to full lines of other manufacturers.
Why models of different nature, price and performance are put togheter and others very similar (i.e. 930 & 940) aren't.
A number of very good or very popular transceivers are totally missing.
Just to point it out, in Europe the weight of FTs to ICs and TSs would be reversed.

TS-930
|
I'm with K9GY on that one. My TS-930 still does a great job on CW, particularly with the PIEXX microprocessor board. I'd also like to hear specifically about people's experience with the Omni 6+.

How Many 756Pro's??
|
Too bad the survey didn't have a box for the IC-756Pro - nice to know if it's catching on at all as a contest rig.

TS-850
|
I've used my TS-850 for nearly 9 years and like it. The lowest filter squeals with static, but no serious problem. I personally like the IC 781 a bit, but it's a pretty complex radio.

No 930 choice?
|
Geez, that's a slap in the face to CW ops that one of the
choices isn't the famous Kenwood TS-930s! Whaaaat's
up with that? I hear the TS-850 is also good on CW but not
so good on SSB? I got tired of taking my 930 for repairs at
AES. I can't find an equivalent modern radio that is as
good as the 930...any thoughts?

Not by choice...
|
All I have access to at the moment is a Kenwood TS-440, so I'm kind of stuck. If I had a choice, I'd have an MP or MP Mk V. They rule :)
