Liability Issues are a farse.
|
I always hear the same old tripe. This time it is with CQ Magazine and their public offerings of logs... "They might be liable if....".
What a bogus argument. If they get sued, please let me know... I will happily donate $1000 to their legal defense fund.
If they do not get sued, then send me the $1000 as compensation for my common sense, I need to put a down payment on a Flex Radio so I can generate more public logs for CQ Magazine.
Yawn.

Privacy?

If names and addresses are a problem, maybe we should let the QRZ, Callbook and FCC Websites know about it!

Privacyand logs not a problem
|
The privacy issue is easily circumvented by making it know in the contest rules that the logs will be made public. An individual then has the right to decide whether or not to submit their log knowing ahead of time all logs will be made public

Privacy issue
|
Publishing the complete log, with details of the station location and operator name, potentially creates a privacy issue under European (and other) data protection laws. There should be a way for entrants to opt-out if they are concerned to protect their privacy.
This is a legal compliance matter. CQ Magazine could end up in hot water over what it is doing if someone takes this up.
A compromise might be to delete the station address and operator name from the logs, but I am not a lawyer and don't know if that would be sufficient to comply with the laws. Since most callsigns are, in effect, personal identifiers not unlike names, the whole idea might be scuppered.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but please don't shoot the messenger! Detailed log information can be fascinating for propagation analysis and to learn about competitive techniques.

Public Logs

A real benefit to the ham community
(contester or not) of CQ publishing logs is
the opportunity for real hard data based
propagation research. Imagine the
thousands of stations making thousands of
contacts in a 2 day cycle. This is a rich
source of data about band openings and radio
wave propagation. There's no treasury like
it!
An example appears in my blog at:

All contest logs should be made public! Maybe there would be a little less cheating.
