DX CONTESTING ON 80 IS A REAL CHALLENGE! EVEN WITH THE RIGHT ANTENNAS ONE NEEDS LOTS OF PATIENCE TO PULL THE CALLS OUT OF THE QRN/QRM/MUD ETC. NEVER ASSUME YOU KNOW THE BAND. IN CQWW THE BAND WAS OPEN TO EUROPE FROM THE EAST COAST AT 3:30 PM! ANYONE CAN WORK THE HIGHER BANDS--80 (AND 160) ARE THE TOUGHIES!!

20 meters is that. 'Sfunny that 10m can be in good shape (evidenced by beacon sigs & how strong the W1AW code practice session is!) with nobody using it; 40m can be great if you can HEAR anybody over all the racket; 80 & 160 require being a Nightowl to really appreciate; 30's cool for QRP-CW and always offers surprises...but, faced with the need to make an immediate decision and get on the air to work DX RIGHT NOW, with a non-ham visitor in the shack: I'll automatically pick 20m.
Always playing, always active, always open to somewhere...

I like the challenge of the night-time bands.
For me, 40 CW is the place to be. 160 would be my favorite, except the activity on both 160 and 80 meters has been so sparse since the 70's decade.

Given a decent antenna 40m is reliable year
in year out. a wonderful band for contesting.
Many operators have NEVER heard 40m with
a decent antenna - as in yagi above 90 feet !
40m gives wonderful opennings to JA from
western USA, likewise it gives long openning
to europe from eastern USA.
40m RULES !!!

Unlike some of the higher bands where working DX tends to be like "shooting fish in barrel", 80m ( as well as 160m) constitute much more of a challenge not to mention fewer lids!

Love dx on low bands.
Usualy 40 mts give me extra satisfation, on short and long distance.
Like 80 but got a lot of dificults , need very high antenna for a good job.

Toss up...
|
For me it's a toss up between 10 and 40 meters. 40 is open year round all throughout the solar cycle, however, with 10 meters and sporadic-E prop. the band can come alive at any point during the cycle, and it's very unpredictable, thus making it more of a challenge. Plus there's less QRM and far more room to operate, so I have to say that 10 meters is my favorite HF band. As for my favorite Amateur Radio band of all? 6-meters, no question about it. However, all of the Amateur Radio bands have their "moments" and I love them all very much. I'm active on all bands (160M-23cm), all modes. You have to love it! 73 Clinton AB7RG/9

Where's the connection between these bands ?
Likewise 12 and 10 ? As a contest freak the WARC bands don't fit for me 99 % of the time

Peculiar Question Design

Now why in the world would anyone lump 17m with 15m and 12m in with 10m. Why wasn't 30m lumped in with 20m? 15m is my favorite band and 17m is a non-starter. Very peculiar!

I found a new love with 30m. There are less croccodiles (Big moth - small ears) than on other bands. More low power stations and CW only - althrough I still have a hard time with high-speed CW, but I keep working on it.

I've voted for 40 meters because over the entire cycle, it's always magic (of course, it would suck if I were a phone man). But 10 meters has its share of magic too. On the whole, 40 and 80 are the coolest HF bands to me--160 is actually an MF band, or it would make the list too. :-)
