I think you should have an option for "sometimes" I normally do not, but if it is a rare one I do.

QSLs, SASEs, eQSL...

Greetings all!
When chasing cards for 40m/CW DXCC I sent out
a number of letters loaded with green stamps.
Likewise, all sent to managers had SASEs with
them. Even then, my return fraction wasn't up
to what I had expected. Came across a few
stations that NEVER seem to get the card and
are presumably living off of green stamps.
As of this time, I QSL all but the obviously
rare ones via WF5E QSL service and hope he
can work a card. Reasonable success, too. Now
with the advent of eQSLs (my experience is
only with eQSL.cc) there is another great
option. As the thrill of our hobby ought
to be in on-the-air work rather than paperwork,
I surely hope that the ARRL will come to
some sort of terms with the inevitable
eQSL revolution. Right now I have an eQSL
from GJ2A (1999 CQWW/CW, I believe) that will
likely never be replaced by a 'real' one. Now
how much is it worth to me to have my DXCC
tally raised by one integer. I know I worked
him, he has acknowledged it, I had the fun,
etc. Anyway, I have saved the $2 towards a
better antenna and tower! D68C got a
$2 SASE, though.

Groan ... again, a survey with insufficient choices. My answer would be, "of course, IF I want a QSL in return." I routinely QSL, via the bureau, every unique band-mode combination with a given DX station. I don't expect a card back at all, or if the other station chooses to QSL, via the bureau is fine with me.
I can't wait for E-QSLs that are good for DXCC and other major awards to become an operational reality. Rumors say it'll be soon...

SASE - why don't you!

As the QSL Manager for YJ0DX's last two forays into the Pacific,I am constantly amazed with the numbers of cards received without an return postage or SASE.
The cost of these trips is bourne by the operator, and not a funded by major sponsorships. The final courtesy of a QSO is a QSL, but the SASE is the finalmark of thanks and respect for what they have given you.
As I think it was KH2D who once said "you're only wanted for your QSL", then please be considerate and enclose an SASE to ensure you get what you want

normally the only QSL's that I start the QSL process for
are ones that I need.

I use $ or irc to "buy" a dx qsl only if it a new one. It used to be a hobby but now many people live from that. In my opinion a qsl with that cost shouldn't count for any award. Think of using a $ for every dxcc/band. The cost would be much higher than the cost off all the ham equipments in and out of the shack. That is the way it works. Good (and economic) dx's!

In the beginning it was fun for me to "chase cards", and I used SASEs (or green stamps) whenever I wanted a "new one". But now, family, job, etc., take up enough time. What little I have left for radio I try to spend operating or working on the station - OK, and eHam, too! QSLing requires WAY too much time for the little pleasure I get out of certificates or awards. Sure they are nice, just like getting a plaque or certificate in a contest. But I get more fun out of creating and operating a station that allows nabbing WAZ or DXCC in a single contest weekend or 5BDXCC in one season than out of QSLing for same.

ZC4DW was kind enough to respond very promptly to my request for a qsl card. Thank you Des. Anyone who does not include an sase and a donation to cover incidental costs deserves everything they don't get. E-QSL's will reduce donations to help with the cost dxpeditions and I make a note on every card I send out that KB5KYO does not accept E-QSL's.

I receive thousands of direct QSL cards, and likewise reply in the thousands. A station who includes an IRC, or 'green stamp', or indeed anything to cover postage will get a direct reply. If someone doesn't have the decency to cover the postage back, then I'm afraid their cards get sent back via the bureau. The majority do include some form of postage. I ask myself, this guy can afford a transceiver, antennas, his licence costs, but not a stamp! He can't be that bothered for a quick reply.
I feel really great when a big parcel of cards arrive from the bureau. Just browsing through the cards and reading the many nice comments almost re-lives the QSO. Cards are a personal thing, and I DON'T accept any e-QSL cards.
Whenever I work a rare one, I include sufficient IRC's. How can you expect a DX station to pay for postage back to thousands of people that work him each year, and they want his card?!

Chase DX and look forward to getting cards. To each his own in that regard. Buro is a hassel etc. etc... However some day eQSL.cc will gain the acceptance it should have for awards but there seems to be alot of "politics" around this and the ARRL not recognizing "electronic" qso's regardless to what lengths eQSL seems to take to attempt to develop a system that "Guarantee's Authenticity". I would love to see one of the competing publications like CQ sponsor a contest that uses eQSL for clearing contacts and start generating their own paper chase and awards. The process is so easy to use and the "exchange" is virtually instantaneous. Most HAMS don't even realize that they have eCards out there waiting for them unless they get on the site. Not enough promotion I guess but every new idea starts out slow until it takes hold. With ARRL and CQ with a near monopoly on official awards, it will be tough for eQSL until one of these organizations provides them some overt support and partners with them. $$$$ must be getting in the way -- come on guys cut a deal !! It seems odd that with all the growing interest in digital modes that eQSLing is taking so long to catch on in the HAM community. Postal $$ going up not down !

I answer cards, but I just can't imagine requesting QSL cards from anyone in my lifetime. It's worse than paying bills every month, and postage costs so much that all I can think about while answering cards is what I *could* be doing with my time and money to improve my station. Maybe I'm in the minority, but QSL chasing just isn't any fun for me.

Have recently deposited over 90,000 qsos from
CT logs to eqsl site contest activity since 1990 for one call only. Hopefully eqsl will eventually take off and be totally accepted by the qsling community , awards collectors and distributors.

SASE with QSL Card

If it is a card that I "need" to further my pursuit of an award, I enclose a SASE, otherwise, I return cards the same way I receive them. I have always tried to reciprocate QSL's 100%, and have even returned a few that did not have a SASE, and I'm sure that most everyone has?
My most "unpleasant" memory regarding QSL'ing happened 19 years ago when my son, KB4DOV, then age 10, finished in the Novice Roundup top 5,and won KY section. I assisted him in researching the callsigns (remember the CallBook) for all 50 states and helped him prepare SASE's for each one. To my dismay, his return was about 50%! That left me somewhat concerned with the "real intent" of the ham community, in general. IMHO, it makes no difference how many QSO's are made, contest or otherwise, if a SASE is received, it certainly deserves an answer! I also believe that far too much money is spent on retrieving QSL's from stations, and some QSL managers, that "charge" for the return? When award manager either stop requiring a card as proof of a contact, or when they begin accepting electronic QSL's, the SASE will be just another "fond memory"!
