There is no way to set up catagories for each and every type of station in the world. How about 3 el yagi, 3 el quad, at 27 feet, 28feet 29 feet.....227 feet. etc etc.? Where would it stop? I dont even try anymore, I dont have the money to compete equipment or antenna wise. I work a few, searching for new ones, and thats about it, unless hear old friends, then give them a call so they can have the point. Havent turned in logs in around 17 years, dipoles and even a th3jr at 28 feet has no chance against the 7 el single band at 200 feet that lots of people are running. Was a memember of the ET3USA group that won top multi/multi twice for SSB and once for CW back in mid 60s. Have a dozen winning certificates on the wall from single/single and single op/multiple bands all from 60s 70s 80s while overseas where my 100 watts and dipoles were equal to everyone elses. Won section in the 67 Novice roundup. So im no beginner to contests, just know that there is no big chance of winning against todays moneyed stations.

Average city lot & one tower
|
Perhaps the restriction could be to antennas situated on an average size city lot - say 75' x 100' (max) and one tower of any height. The size of the lot and the city bylaws will normally restrict the height of the tower.

Height Limit
|
A simple height limit would allow for more creativity and competition than specifying tribanders.
Say 35 ft or 40 ft. Any type of antenna would be OK.

(not qrp) and limited antenna
class. Better antenna and or Hi
Power do have an advantage.

Is not necesary one more antenna category.
I�m working all contest with 3 dipoles and got more satisfations...what is my category? Dipole Category (HI HI) Is impossible. How many categories? tribander 3el ,4 el or 5 elem (hi hi )CX9AU

This makes total sense. The tribander represents a typical modest installation. Let the average ham compete with others on a level playing field, with the chance of placing top 10, etc. No way the average ham can compete with contesting gonzos with hundreds of pounds of aluminum in the air.

of winning. Almost regardless of the type of
competition involved, winning has never been
and should never be easy.

Tough call

I have to concur with OH1NOA. Single element antennas makes a more legit category. Quality tribander & tall vertical/big wire can make a pretty competitve station in any category. If you want to encourage more activity, make a category for single-element (the stealth, vertical & dipole set). On the other hand, I have fun even though I'm not competitive. If I have a category for my station, I might have to get serious.

I voted no but I guess the more participants the better.My only problem is that most tribander/single L stations are stations restricted by height living in suburbs where ever it may be.These contests are DX contests as compared to WPX where I can sit at my little station and run a little on 80m to work my rare "N9" prefix.I realize some people need to see to the result of their efforts (ie:Wallpaper)and if that encourages more people to get on I guess thats ok.The point of contesting is to get on and test you and your stations capabilities, and have fun.I know that "radio sport" has its serious players which is great (its the serious guys I believe that drive the little guys to improve their skills and stations-it does me)but it is the the "little guy" that makes the contest happen. Of course as in any contests the scores are based on location, location, location.If you can just accept where you have decided to make a living and contest from there,competing with other stations in your geographic region,that should be all the drive you need. I realize that maybe more peolpe will head off to far away lands to plug in a radio and some aluminum and copper if the category exists and thats a good thing.So who knows? Maybe it shouldn't be a yes or know answer..... maybe a why not. It's a party and with any party the more the merrier.

Who cares how many categories there are? That's not why I contest. Another category might get some more DX stations on the bands for a semi-serious or serious effort which translates into more stations to work on several bands.

Tribander/single element is sometimes very good station. At least this combination in Slovenia beats stacked yagis in Finland ... ;=D
More I would like to see "single element" -category (+ maybe low power): something like "limited category" in European Field Days. You can only run with wires and verticals + 100 watts ...

I'm fine with this idea. If my category gets more watered down, so what? I'm competing with so few people anyway, that it really doesn't matter. There is no reason to compare my score with N6RT in California, and there is no reason to compare my score with K4OGG who has a much lesser station than me. Both guys are great operators and should have the opportunity to compare themselves with their competition. If this creates more activity (which it clearly has in the WPX), then how can it be bad thing except for a few ego-maniacs who need to see 50 people under them in the results before they feel their manhood?

Why not a category for people using homebrew or kit radios? The current "number of ops/radios" and packet/no-packet seem to be all we need. NZ3O/SOA
