15M
|
Did a 15M Monoband effort with some DX chasing on the other bands... 15M was much better than expected with many parts of the world heard AND WORKED!
Not bad for a Classic 33 up 30 ft atop a roof top tower on my garage.

20 meters
|
Spent most of my time on 20m, where it had pretty good conditions. Nice JA/UA0 openings both afternoons, plus quite a few African stations to work.

Echos

Agree with Len's experience, though on 40. I heard definite echo on signals coming from the Pacific, for about 30 minutes. Also, I noted that there was a possible skew path East on 40 Sunday East Coast sunset that lasted for about an hour.

First contest
|
This was my first CW contest. I really didn't know what to expect. I decided to work 80m and 15m because I don't spend enough time on those bands. 80m was really great for me I got some really good DX there one in France and one in Hawaii. Thanks to them both for their patience in pulling me out of the noise.
15m was a different story. I found I have really bad RF problems on that band. RF was getting in the radio, making the sidetone sound like bacon frying. I reduced my output power to about 30 watts to get things to calm down a bit. I only made a handful of contacts on 15m. The best one was Brazil.
I will be doing this again next year.

Echos
|
I heard echos on 80M at 5:30 AM PST and these were not your usual echos. They were distinctly two complete echos. It was very hard to copy because I was interfering with myself running FBI. Later, around 3:30 PST, I heard single echos on 20M.
10M opened up for a short period and I picked up a few extra zones, but I could see the signals going up and down with the band - like the ionosphere was waving like a flag. My first thought was that we might be having a big meteor shower.
A great contest considering I started preparing after the contest was running!
