Work 'em without worry.
|
I can't possibly think of a reason not to work a dupe. There's
just too many sources of errors that would cause scenarios
where one guy thinks it's a duplicate, and the other not --
almost all of them involve busted calls.
There's no sense in worrying about it. Work them, AND log
them.
I can't think of a single contests that penalizes for duplicate
contacts.

It depends...
|
Most contests do not penalize one for logging dupes, so log 'em. If the rules specifically note "no dupes" are there is at least one, then don't log them. It takes a lot less time to log them than to discuss it. Seriously, why is this such an issue?

Not in ARRL VHF Contests!
|
Bob,
How exactly were the penalties accessed? I'm not saying something didn't happen but I've submitted hundreds of contest logs since electronic submission became the standard and I've never had a legitimate dupe result in a penalty.

Not in ARRL VHF Contests!
|
Unforunately after being penalized by the ARRL for leaving dupes in my VHF contest cabrillo logs (even though they say they don't and I didn't count them for the claimed score) I will no longer log dupes in an ARRL contest. I asked Sean KX9X about why they did that, but he never got back to me with the answer. This policy annoys me because I have to break my run to tell them they are a dupe, when it was and that I will not log the present Q. So far this has NOT resulted in a lot of NILs.

Working Dupes (Yes)
|
In almost all contests, it is much faster, and much safer, to happily work all dupes.
Sweepstakes CW is the only contest I'll actually ask someone if they are a dupe, and if there is any question/confusion, I work them again anyway.
This also tends to help me stay away from the "not in log" penalties!

I dont work dupes, and I wont tell someone else how to operate their contest station.

Much Faster
|
It is always much faster to work the dupe than to argue with them. The logging software will automatically handle the dupe and you'll be off to make the next QSO.

It's foolish not to work dupes
|
If someone works AD7E but logs it incorrectly as AB7E, it shows up as a dupe when I later call them. If they tell me I'm a dupe and don't work me, they get a penalty for a busted call for the earlier contact. If they work me, they get the QSO credit and the dupe isn't scored against them.
It's typically faster and always smarter to work the dupe. 30% of the respondents so far say they don't work dupes but it beats me what their reasoning is.

Work Em!
|
I agree with vk2cz and kk9a and would add that not to work the dupe potentialy hurts me, not the other station. In the 160 contests, I usually see 5 to 10 stations off frequency enough, and timed well enough, to appear in my log while working someone else. Errors of as nuch as 400 Hz are quite common.

Silly Question
|
Of course you must log a dupe, otherwise you will be short changing yourself. What you think is a dupe is very probably not... I cannot share the extent of my frustration of not securing a QSO when told "sorry dupe"..
My callsigns are VK8AA (not VK9AA), and VK2CZ (not VK4CZ)... ughh

Work Them!
|
I work all dupes who call me. It ensures that you both have a valid contact and it is much faster than discussing any possible previous QSO. There is no longer a penalty for working dupes and it takes only a few seconds to complete a new contact. Once in the CQ 160m contest the very first station that I called would not work me claiming that I was a dupe. During a WPX CW contest I called a VE5 that I needed for a multiplier and he would not work me claiming I was a dupe. During a contest it is easy to miscopy callsigns or for someone to work another station on the same frequency that you are on. Stations that you think are dupes may not be, so work them!
