QSLs
|
QSLing is the final courtesy of a QSO. Thats what I was taught as a kid, have taught hundreds of others and cannot believe the numbers who responded with "NO". Its part of hamming/dxing. The only time you should NOT send a card(after receiving one) is if the station is not in your well kept log. LY2OX sez if you really want one, you will send one Direct. NOT SO. The bureau system was founded to save each of us money, and I use it almost 100%, unless the dx station advises me he only QSL by CBA. Then , if there are other hams in his country, I dont send him one at all- wait till I work another one, who I hope will use the bureau. Of course there are no bureaus in some countries, and I hope for one that has a manager (who also uses the bureau). No wonder my log book has hundreds of blanks where a check mark should indicate a QSL received. I send them via the bureau unless told otherwise- and with an attitude like this, no wonder there is such a poor return rate. Im up to 316, so you see, some people do indeed QSL. Yes buying them isnt cheap. How about making your own? I have designed every card, and either self printed or found a cheap local printer/copier in every location I have been in. The now cost me 3 cents each. The bureau is still the cheapest way to go, even at $5.00 a pound for outgoing cards. A few bucks a year to the incoming bureau (they do an outstanding job) and a little effort on your part sure perks our fellow hams up when they open the mail and find that state or county they have been looking for.

Contest QSL's

One of my primary reasons for getting into a contest is to find something I need. I always log QSL's sent and received. If I dont get a card from a station he will never get my points again, I just pass on by --. Bob - K4RFK

QSLing Made Easy
|
I use CT for contests, then transfer log into LOGic5 (see QST). Using LOGic5, I can "filter" my QSLing - selecting EXACTLY what I wish to QSL. Then I print my own cards - 1 at a time or batched in lots of 4. The address info is transfered by the software out of the log and printed on back of card which means NO labels! For large runs, I load sheets of card stock in my printer and walk away. They all get printed AND come out pre-sorted, just the way the ARRL likes 'em. Key thing to remember is YOU can control what YOU want to print, as and when you want to - and I LOVE that feature!! So, want to print a whole contest? No problem. Want to print a handful of cards received direct in today's mail? Go for it. Want to reply to SHORT WAVE LISTENERS? Do it! The other neat thing is I get to compose different card fronts ('cuz I like prnting on both sides of cards), sometimes with pictures, sometimes with YOUR call sign on the front (you may have gotten such a card from me as K1UQ or KA1UQ). Oh, LOGic5 let's you design your QSL cards - what gets printed, and where on the card.
So please, printing lots of cards can be realy easy - with the right tools.
And for you contesters who don't QSL, while working at a multi-multi last fall, one of our ops reported a Q where the other station said "NO QSL! NO QSO!" and refused to make the exchange!!

I am making c.a. 20,000 QSO/PA in the contests,so this problem is rather painful for me.
I always respond to DIRECT cards and TRYING to answer cards received via bureau.I f somebodey REALLY needs my QSL,
he sends it Direct.I don't understand why some stations I am working every contest continuig write cards to me...
This concerns mainly JA's and some of K's.
QSL'ing is part of our game anyway so it's unavoidable...

They really are an expensive chore. We need an E server approach acceptable to DXCC etc quickly. I am very close to moving into the "do not QSL" category

I confirm and answer for all qsl cards. If somebody send you a qsl card he would like to receive the confirmation. It does not matter if you have already contacted him several times.

KN7Y - Contest QSL's
|
Incorporating labels with "Writelog" (tm for logging software), this is the first year that I QSL'd 100 percent (with a few obvious exceptions) for QSO's with DX op's in the 1999 CQWW CW, 1999 ARRL 10 Meter, 2000 ARRL Int'nl DX, and 2000 CQ WPX CW contests. I believe it will cut down on the potential back log of bureau cards that usually comes afterward. Most were sent "TKS QSL" except for the few needed band/mode QSO's. Already have received a couple of email "TKS"! We'll see how this works out as bureau cards contine to roll in.

JA QSLs

I guess I am one of a very few west coast stations that answer all the JA cards Many contesters I know do NOT send cards to anyone [rare exceptions]. I reply to all received. It amounts to about 2,500 JA cards a year.

I send cards to all new stations contacted per band/mode. Eventually, my contest logs get merged into a central database which also contains non-contest QSO's. This database lets me know which stations I've worked in before.

No, I don't recieve/send 10k QSO's per year like Scott K8DX does. I really don't know where he gets the time to do this! I think it is great that big-guns QSL so well!

We reply to all QSLs
|
I'm fortunate to have a QSL manager (KQ1F).
We QSL all cards received, direct, or bureau. They usually go out the way they came, except that direct cards with no postage or IRCs go back through the bureau. No "one call per envelope" or any of that. Get us the card and we'll send you one.
In addition to the home calls we take care of all our DXpedition callsigns, of which there are over thirty.
For the home calls we QSL new band/mode QSOs as well.

QSLs
|
I usually only send QSL-cards for
non-Contest-QSO's (100%!), and
for the QSO's in contests I just reply
incoming QSL's 100% via buro. (I only send for contest-QSO's when I need the DXCC etc)
I dont have the time to send all QSL's for contest since I like
to write every QSL by hand...

I reply 100% to all cards received, whether direct or thru bureau. I only send- with SASE to any US station or SASE with appropriate extra to a foreign station- for new band/mode/country contacts.

I'm a little behind

I love getting cards from the bureau. I answer them all in the computer, but I'm very far behind in printing labels and sending the cards out. It's my resolution for the new millenium.

QSL cards...
|
I remeber when I started on HF, I used to stay up after my parents went to bed and make 40 meter QSO's half the night. I would put a lamp underneath my desk, fire up the Drake TR-4C and drag the key and headphones under the desk with me. Not only did I QSL EVERY contact I made, but I printed out the guy's address, wrote a few comments on the page and put it in a 3-ring binder for posterity. I remember my first contact was with a guy in Tennessee. I gave that practice up after I mistakenly fell upon the SSB ARRL DX Contest the next Spring. I made some 200 contacts (mostly DX) and I simply couldn't find most of their addresses, let alone handle so many! That's when I discovered the 'buro' and logbooks! (ok, so I was a slow learner) Now I QSL all DX and only US stations who send me a card. I QSL ALL CW contacts, no matter what(I'm going for CW wallpaper). I have found that Japanese amateurs are the best QSLers in the World. One week I talked with DOZENS of JA's and within 2 months I received DOZENS of cards, both direct and through the bureau. I think only 5 or 6 didn't QSL out of that batch (the first of many). Anyway, just my 2 cents...

Contest QSLs
|
I checked the choice closest to my preference, but the fact is that I QSL all contacts where it's my first with the station on the given band/mode combination.
DX4WIN has a facility for selecting only QSOs that meet this criterion. I hope this way to satisfy everyone who wants a QSL from me, but that over time the burden on both me and the bureau system won't be absurd.

Contest QSL's
|
First part of my radio amateur life I was expecting each qsl card any each one worth as gold medal to me. Now when I don't have to much private life contest are only thing wich are in my area of interest. So qsl cards are no more main thing in my life but still know lots of guys collecting qsl. For those I replly cards but only direct. I make notice to every contest summary sheet on WEB that only way to exchange is direct with SASE.

I really, really appreciate those who include a SASE with their QSL requests. The burden should rightly be on the party wanting the QSL, not the person from whom the QSL is requested.

Contest QSL's

This was the first year that I QSL'ed all QSO's through the bureau. With shipping alone it cost over $250 for last years contests 10,000 cards. I'd like to continue to QSL all contacts 100%, but it makes more sense to send them out for new band/ modes. Maybe there will be a day when I just need to send out a handfull at the end of the contest season! Wishful thinking...
