How High
|
When the MinuteMan Missile program was being
built, As a contractor I had a chance to go
up (Not Climb, but ride the Bosoms Chair)
1,200 feet on a 1,500 foot tower outside of
Minot, N.D. I can prove it - my fingerprints
are imbedded in the tower! The most
unexepected sensation was the amount of
noise from the wind whistling through the
steel.

Climbing towers
|
My tallest is 893' where I was Chief Engineer at KISR (KISSER). I remember having to carry a tow-sack full of light bulbs. I now know how a box kite works. The coolest thing I ever seen was the sun setting over the western horizion one clear evening. Then the beacon came on. WOW! Ouch!

for the young'ins

I climbed a 250' tower back in my high school days. We had a 10 watt FM educational station that I over saw the operation of. It was a blast back then! Now at 45 my limit is about 60 to 70 feet.

Gettin' High
|
I remember being strapped to a dipole aboard the USS Compass Island, EAG15(?; 3 I think, but maybe 6). Back in late 1968 we were in dry dock (Hoboken or maybe Red Hook, NJ). I was cleaning the dipoles. One of the dipoles, up on the 03 level or thereabouts, was right on the side of the ship. Dangling there, looking down to the bottom of the dry dock, it seemed to me I was 300' in the air.

Big, tall towers
|
I used to work at the oil fied in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and while they call it the North Slope, it is indeed quite flat. Hence the need for tall towers. Luckily the big ones were platform towers at 200 plus feet. I only climbed them when it was warm +20F or more!

Towers
|
I live 4-1/2 miles away from a large airport that has an annual air show which includes the Navy's Blue Angels flying team. One year, the day before the show they were out practicing over my QTH. That day, while I was up on the 90' 10M tower doing antenna work, six Blue Angels fighters in the "delta wedge" formation came right down my street no more than about 1000' above ground. Being 90' in the air on the tower, I almost felt like I was in their jet wash. I remember vividly being able to read the smaller printing on the sides of the fuselages. Geez, was it cool!

Towers

The most interesting experience I've had was the time I was up about 300' when some joker in an F-16 opted for a low fly-by. I'm pretty sure I saw the plane's rivets!

375' with the tv transmitter "ON"
|
Used to change lights on the KWSU TV tower in Pullman WA with the TV transmitter on. It's a real "leap" of faith to jump onto the radiating element and climb 50' of unguyed 25G at 325'.

A lot of people call CQ on 15meters or 20 meters but nobody calls CQ on 50 feets or 66 feets. Great joke .. :)

Big towers

I'm at that age (54) when being afraid of climbing tall towers (200 ft) is not as big a factor as getting running out of gas going to the top....It's a long way up.

TALL tower

Does standing on the top plate of a 1249' UHF TV tower
count? The Nashville TN skyline looks entirely different
when you are standing ABOVE it!

Cold, windy
|
I'm glad to be one of the "50%" group who's climbed >60m up a tower. I only wish the experience would have been in a warmer climate and not in NJ when the ambient at 200 feet above ground was about zero degrees with a six million mile per hour (or so it seemed) wind...nothing like the feeling of a crescent wrench frozen stuck to your tongue and lips, having been placed there "for a second" to change hands. Those who have been there know EXACTLY what I mean.
