Contesting Online Survey

Survey Question Current Survey Question

Do you plan to enter the CQ WW DX Contest?

Recent Surveys

Recently the RDXC committee reclassified P3F to high power from low power without publicly providing strong evidence that any infraction had occurred. They concluded was that the contestant was running HP on 80/40m but not full-time, just 10 minutes here and there without any convincing evidence. It appears they used the RBN as their source of information. Should the RXDC contest have to publicly provide convincing evidence before reclassifying a station from LP to HP?

Randy, K5ZD, wrote a sidebar titled " Convergence and Change" in the 2015 CQWW CW printed results in CQ magazine. He wrote that the "convergence of personal computers, Internet access, DX clusters, and CW Skimmer have changed the nature of CW contesting". He goes to say that it is "more difficult to police the line between the single operator working alone and those who are using the assistance of DX spotting." In light of this convergence and change is it time to recombine SO and SOA into a single category?

Should a "Tribander/Single Wire" category (like the one used in WPX) be an available category in CQWW, ARRL DX, and SS?

No,
Those large tribanders wich are actually interlaced monobanders do perform like them.

A multiband wire antenna category could be a separate one

Vertical/singlewire
Would not a multiband vertical and/or single wire catagory be a better catagory?...I used to have a very large triband yagi at 140 feet along with high dipoles for the low bands and that would perform with the big boys especially from here in Maine....Having a tall(er) tower shouldn't be the determining factor in a contest catagory I don't feel.

I think it should be a wires only category, I don't feel so bad off with my KT-34XA at 100'

Tribanders/Single wire
I like this and beleive it will usher many others in to contesting since they have hope of winning something.

Each time I have recieved *any* cert here it has motivated me.

A 6-hour category
If I had a choice of adding a new category, it would be a "time-limited" one, for example a 6-hour category as we have in a few contests by now. Not only would this appeal to all of us who have to share time between contesting and other things during weekends. The time-limited category adds an element of strategy/planning for band openings that would maximize the score. Now, that is a challenge in itself!

The best invention
Yes,

This is the best contesting invention in decades. Finally something that gives a chance to the ordinary guy. The little pistols are the the great majority.

If you think there are too many categories, let me propose a solution, remove single op high power.

Tribander / Single Wire
No.

I have to chuckle when I think about this category. After 40 years of contesting I just added my first Tribander. Before that, it was a vertical and wires. So I guess I have graduated up to a category that is considered a handicap. What's that all about? Seriously, I think there are enough categories and I would be against diluting them further. Also, I believe that geographic location is a lot bigger handicap than Tribander / Single Wire.

Tribander/ single wire
I can not speak for SS or AARL DX contests but this will be another way to dilute contest categories in CQWWDX. In some countries even most popular SOAB HP & LP struggling to reach 10 entries. Taking W6 as an example it is in 20-30 station range in CQWW DX which is rather healthy to keep up competition. Competing globally, well it adds even more variables and very often does not make a lot of sense. Nothing wrong with losing to bigger stations if you can make it to top three, five or ten there. Instead, try winning with a smaller one.

"NO".

Tribander/single wire
I'm a little pistol. My typical set up is an old 6 element tribander at 50 feet, and a trap loaded dipole. I run 100 watts out from what ever rig is in line, and I'm connected to the local DX cluster. If the mood strikes me, I'll hook up my 500 Watt SB200.
My station is probably a typical station. It keeps the neighbours and the wife happy, and I get to have some fun. I don't have the luxury of a large chunk of land, so like others I make do with what I've got. A powerhouse, no, fun you bet. I've been lucky at times to win the odd contest, but not with big towers, big antennas, big power, but with a little bit of skill and luck.
I think more hams would enter contests if they thought they could be competitive (in their class) and don't have to compete with the big antenna(s) group.
A low power triband/wire class could bring a lot more hams into contesting.
Just my 2 bits worth.

Tribanders/singlewire
YES! This should be in every contest. Lets see what skill instead of hardware will do.
It gives the tower by the barbecue guys some hope of building a competitive station. Acrege & stacks no longer needed.
Ummm? let me rethink this.
Yes...During DX contests, EastCoast Tribander/Single element--West Coast Stacks and 4squares! NB7V
