Two towers
|
For many years I used a TH6 and 2 el KLM 40 on a 70 ft tower, shunt fed the tower on 160 and had a four element 80 (top half of a K3LR array) surrounding the tower.
Have moved up to two towers, 80 ft 45G with 2 el Optibeam on 40, modified 204BA at 90 ft and 58 ft of 25G with a 5 el 10 (modified 6el KLM) and a 4 el 15 (modified Cushcraft) at 68 ft. I shunt feed the 80 ft tower for 160 and surround it with the same 4 el 80. No WARC antennas yet, probably a multi band dipole on the small tower.
This setup out performs my previous setup by a good margin.

Mono- or Multi- band antenna?

For VHF, I use mono-band yagi's. For lower HF, mono-band wires; for 40 mtrs, a Force 12 EF-240; and for the upper end of HF, a Hy-gain TH6DX and a Force 12 C31XR.

My TH-11DX is a temporary antenna but it is performing so well I think I'll leave it up in the air (70')

Being a "one tower, one radio" station, I use a Force-12, C3S triband, and a Cushcraft 40-2-CD. I never expect to overcome the "one radio" disadvantage, but I still have as much fun, as possible.

I use 5 el monobanders in a Christmas tree... but if I were doing it again, I would use the new computer designed interlaced yagis... 2 dimensions are less trouble thn 3 dimensions!

Tri-bander - Best Price / Performance
|
When you've got a one tower station that can only hold a single beam, it's hard to beat the tribander.
If I could afford the land/towers/antennas, I'd certainly go with an array of monobanders, but I maintain that the step up from tribander to monobander isn't as great a leap as that from low wires to the tribander.

7-Bander!

I use a Mosley Pro67C-3 that I won as a door prize at the 1996 Dayton Hamvention. It is resonant on 7 bands, 40-10 meters and has worked DXCC on each of them plus mixed Honor Roll. I guess if the question was referring only to contests, it's a quad-bander. It's like FREE pie and chips!

Tribanders, but would like monobanders
|
Being a one tower station, I believe I've optimized as best I can for SO2R:
3 TH7s - top 2 phased and bottom one for second radio.
Of course, monobanders would be preferable, but not an option unless I want to install another tower. I get beat in the pileups by a consistent group, but manage to do OK when the contest is over.

if you're doing low power SO2R "3 band monobander Quad" is a great space saving antenna... of course you will need band pass filters... works great for me at 9A7P...

What's the difference?

I think that if VE5ZX's antenna is fed with 3 feedlines, and could be operated on 2 or 3 bands at once, it is a 3 band monobander. But if it has only a single feedline, then it is a a tri-bander.

Wire Antenna Tip

Being stuck with all wires, I've found its advantageous to use non-resonant, gain antennas (example: stacked EDZs) fed with open wire line to the ground then moving trough L-networks and baluns to acheive 50 ohms unbalanced. Why? Non-resonant antennas do wonders for SO2R interstation interference mitigation. (Poos man's monobanders)

Monobanders
|
For no compromise SO2R, Monobanders are the only way to go. I can Run with 4/4 on 20 and S & P with 8 el or 3 el on 15. Triband stacks force a compromise between full strength run and S & P on a different band, assuming you can switch one out of the stack. With the cost of many of these tribanders, you can often get more bang for less buck with some nice 3, 4, or 5 el monobanders.

I have a C31XR. It is composed of three interlaced monobanders.
Is this antenna a three band monobander or a tribander?
