TS-480SAT
|
The 480 is one of the nicest rigs I have ever owned for contesting. It really shines on RTTY/Digital with a 500 filter installed. Let the computer do the driving while you concentrate on making contacts. Add a Heil microphone, plug the whole thing into a Moxon Rectangle, and go break some pileups -- or start one ;-)
UR FB sigs always 59 in Auburn, Alabama!

Elecraft K2

I use my Elecraft K2 KPA100 extensively for contesting. It performs! I agree with AA4LR, the "I built it" and it performs is a great feeling. It's a great Top Band performer.

For my money, you just can't beat Ten-Tec if you are a CW op, no matter what your activity on the HF bands! ..

ICOM 775
|
I like using the IC 775dsp. Fabulous receiver. No menus to fiddle with when chasing DX. I love the large display, analog meter and big buttons. Also use the IC 756proII but for the extra power (200+ watts) the 775 really helps.

Although I am not an "A" contest operator, I like to get my licks ina dnnow use an Orion 1 565 with the Imrad roofing filters. I must say, that I hear stations now that I never heard before. It's got great ears.

Still using FT-1000D and FT-990. Just bought a roofing filter for the 1000D at Dayton from Inrad. Hope to have time to install it this week.

A little extra power doesn't hurt either.

Yeasu FT-990

My main contest rig is a FT-990 with all the filters. I havent tried it in Data modes ie RTTY PSK31 but for cw and ssb it is great for me. back up rig is a Heath SB1400 with optional cw filter (500 hz) both rigs have imho exlent recievers.
I guess i would use a new 9000 if my wallet could handle it. hihi

Running IC781s and IC7800s. The 781 is a brute. Great RX. Very bullet proof. The service guys in WA are the best. Parts are no problem. Still own several IC765s. They are the best "bang" for your contesting buck IMO!

ICOM 756Pro 3

Still learning how to really get the most from it but so far it is without doubt a great radio for dxing and contesting . I especially appreciate the filtering and twin PBT not to mention the dual preamps.
Previously I have used a FT990, FT920 and more recenntly TS480hx...... none come close..... a big statement considering I am not a ICOM lover

Elecraft K2/100
|
Use an Elecraft K2/100 as my main contest rig. Second rig is a venerable Kenwood TS-430S.
The K2/100 has a superior receiver, does a great job on CW, and performs adequately on SSB. And you get to build it yourself. Not every contester can say he built his own rig....

My contest rig.....
|
...is a venerable Kenwood TS-120s with the optional CW filter installed, a hi-mound hk 706 key, the MJF-941E Versa Tuner, and a Hustler 4-BTV trap vertical. My setup is the very definition of a "little pistol" contester. I have a lot of fun though.

CONTEST RIGS
|
My current setup is a FT990 and the FT1000 MKV Field. Both excellant radios without the benefit of additonal filters.
I've also owned an ICOM IC765 (excellant), a TS850SAT, FT920 (in stock form not IMHO)not great contest radios, CORSAIR II, OMNI V (both excellant in their own rights), and have used other gear at J6R, VE7SCC, and VE7SV. My preference today is the combo I'm using. They are computer friendly, easy to use, and both have excellant receivers.

Old rig, but good loooking.

I am using FT-1000MP MARK5 and IC-756PRO.
The sound of MARK5 hears easily, and is not tired.
I think that MARK5 is good for the contest for a long time.
It is easy to use IC-756PRO for a digital mode of RTTY and PSK31.
I like the scope of the 756PRO for my S&P rig.

Kenwood TS-950SDX
|
My TS-950SDX is all filtered up and has been a good radio for the past 15 years. I also use the matching SM-230 bandscope which put this radio ahead of its time. I have owned three TS-950's...
I recently purchased an Icom 756 Pro III but haven't taken it out of the box. I purchased it after test driving one at the dealer and reading positive remarks from many top-scoring contesters. It combines all the features (plus some) of my '950 into a single box.
The Kenwood TS-950SDX is still a very good value on the used radio market.

I don't contest ssb, I like the narrow filters on both ole 440 and 450. with if shift, notch and able to use narrow cw on usb for digi, can work in some tight places.

I use TS870 with Inrad filters modification(2x 2100Hz). Its great radio. I have never used better equipment. Good dynamic range and easy controll and setup during contest. It is main problem in other equipments. But real DSP will be the main player in near future. I think ...

Contest Rigs
|
I used a Kenwood TS-940SAT as my main contest rig until I got my Icom 756 Pro II. Now the Pro II is my run rig and the TS-940 is my S&P rig. I like the scope on the Pro II but for S&P the 940 with SM-220 and Bandscope work great. On runs, it's nice to see what big sigs start encroaching on me. These two rigs work great to me. Also useful for watching two sides of 160 for DX!

I use a Yaesu FT1000MP MK V for my run radio and I use the Icom 756 Pro III for my S&P radio. I like the scope of the 756 to check bands real quick for S&P.
