My answer would change according to entry category. From down here, we have a realistic crack at winning the world on the high bands, and my goal would be to win. On the low bands, it would be a real feat to break the Top Six, and I'd probably settle for more modest goals. As an SOAB entry, I would probably be very happy with a Top Ten finish!

Gotta be Fun
|
Doing better than I have done before, usually takes care of itself when I have had a good time. I try not to put too much emphasis on a predertimined goal, as something almost always happens to deter me from that goal. When having fun is not my #1 reason for "playing", I will find something else to do!

Winning is what counts - it's fun to really 'go for it' sometimes, to give it your best shot. Other times, just being in the crowd is fun.

Universal answer

Meeting some predefined, personal goal contains in facts all the other choices.
The own personal aim can be to win, to finish in the top ten or simply to enter for having a nice time or fun with no mind about score and listing.

Having Fun

Absolutely! Having fun is the sole reason for getting into a contest!!
Having said that, winning the continent or winning the world may be one component that contributes to the fun. But if it appears that I'm not winning the world, that doesn't necessarily mean I'm not having fun. The adrenline that comes with nice runs, successful multiplier management, and unusual propagation like Long Path makes it a blast.
But 500 QSOs, getting together with friends, and a nice plate of rice and beans in Puerto Rico works, too!

Contesting Fun
|
No question about it - I am doing it for the FUN as the primary reason.
For some reason though, I seem to have the most fun when I'm doing well, or better than last time.

It was a hard choice, but have to go with "doing better than I've done before." Especially since I'm in a contest club with several top tenners . It's a given that I'm having fun or I won't be in the contest, but this was a close choice as well. As others have said, all were good choices. If I'm not improving even against myself, however, I can't see that the other options are going to happen (except the having fun part, perhaps) even in my wildest dreams. 73 de KS4YT :0)

It depends

I have voted for"top ten "variant.
But it depends,naturally which contest we are talking about:In case it is Lithuanian Championship ,EU sprint or at least PACC -top ten should be target as minimum.In "great" contests picture is different,as my location and antennas do not allow to be competitive enough,but even in this case I am trying to choose cathegory permitting enter "the box"

Having a good time!

All of the above is nice, but for me it's mainly about having a good time. What good is first place if it wasn't any fun? Beating prior performances or meeting a new goal is always satisfying too. 73 Clinton AB7RG/9

If it isn't fun, why do it? It's really fun to succeed at my personal goals, but that alone won't get me through the second half of a 48-hour DX contest. At the end of the day (and the second day!), it's all about having a good time.

I'm usually content to have a good time. However, there are a few events which I am so enthralled with I can't HELP but dream dreams of "making the box". Guess spending the blood/sweat/tears/cash to build a competitive station increases that goal every year - but bottom line "The worst day contesting is better than the best day working!".

Doing better

I picked "Doing better than I've done before". I agree that having fun is important, but I seem to have the most fun when I'm becoming better at something (golf, radiosport, even work). To mix in another "answer", doing better is almost ALWAYS my "predefined personal goal". I think this is natural. Whether it's because I managed to incorporate new hardware, or I learned to handle pileups better or I was just able put more hours in the chair - as long as I can see the results myself, I can claim personal success.
What doesn't *really* matter to me is recognition by a third party - whether it be in a magazine or by a club or friend - although a "dinner bet" can be awfully fun to cash in on!

Having a good time is the trump card answer. If you aren't having a good time, then find something else to do. The other choices come after that.
Early on in my career, I made being #1 the reason for being there. However, it wasn't until I made having fun #1 that the other things started to fall into place.
However, there are great contesters out there who are more serious about it. It really depends on your personality.
I guess my definition of success is now "leave contesting a better place than before I came."

If you live in the North, you better find some way to have fun with contesting other than making the Top Ten box or winning. It isn't going to happen from here very often.
