I know this is not the right forum to talk about Field Day but hear me out. In this day of Homeland Security I think we should change the format of Field Day and really see what we can do with Emergency preparedness. Instead of exchanging "UR 59 IL", let's make the exchange meaningful. We should exchange situation reports with local, state and regional emergency agencies(local hospitals, PD/FD, ESDA, FEMA, etc) interfaced w/onsite ham stations) and see which group had the most accurate message totals at the end of the test. Field Day as it stands now is like any other contest, it should be about emergency preparedness. It's time for a change!

A previous commenter about Field Day said that because of the simple exchange, Field Day is little more than "just another contest". While I understand what he's getting at, Field Day for our club was far from that. We had over 90 participants (many of whom had never experienced HF)helping to set up stations, antennas, operating, cooking, or just watching. Many visitors stopped by,including our Governor and other community leaders, reporters from two TV stations as well as local newspapers and community leaders, and everyone had great fun. Field Day is what you make it...it can be just another contest, or it can be a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what we can do to a huge and important audience.
