Contesting Online Speak Out

Speak Out: SSB operations out of the 40m bandplan

Every DX phone contest, on 40 meters, stations can be heard operating SSB down below 7040kHz and others, working split, listening for contacts there. Even though the "7040" plan is voluntary, do you feel it still deserves to be honored during contests?

I 'd want to keep the 7040 border. During SSB-contests it it impossible to have normal contacts. Stations even call listening 7008 :(
But, working split is fun!

You wouldn't have to work split if the NA stations operated SSB 7040 to 7100 in contests. But, of course, that would result in NA ops generating anger in their own country. So, instead, the NA ops, (and the writers of NA contest rules) think it's much better to encourage _others_ to operate outside the IARU regional bandplan. (Rather than cause trouble in your own back yard, it's much better to generate the anger somewhere else.)

Oh for God's sake it's only a few weekends a year. It's bad enough we have to work split!!!!

And it not just the CW folks that are angry. Just launch and listen with your favourite RTTY or PSK31 program during the SSB 'tests and you will seen what I mean!

Why do contesters go below 7040? ...to get away from the QRM no doubt. But by doing so their QRM is in turn destroying the fun for the non contesters. Seems a very selfless act on the part of the contesters that behave this way.

Anyway isn't working around the QRM caused by fellow contesters part of the contest challenge?

Yes - lots of wrath.
Even if SSB contesters know nothing else, they often know something about multipliers. Here is their second lesson: If they operate SSB in the CW band, they will QRM between 4 and 7 CW QSOs - that's between 8 and 14 angry CW ops for every pig-headed SSB contester - and, potentially, another 8 to 14 new recruits to join the CW 'policemen'.

I would like to see contesters clean up their SSB signals. It's one thing to transmit below 7040, but another to splatter it all over the band. No excuse for a 10khz wide signal.

Stay out of the bottom 25 kc with ssb or suffer the wrath as you know others know and those who don't deserve.

Band plans are agreed by Ham radio organising bodies and are intended to be fair for all users. There will never ever be enough space on any band for contesters, if they could use the whole band and get away with it, they would !

Time for a change of topic. Use a graded approach . . .
