Speak Out: SSB operations out of the 40m bandplan
Every DX phone contest, on 40 meters, stations can be heard operating SSB down below 7040kHz and others, working split, listening for contacts there.
Even though the "7040" plan is voluntary, do you feel it still deserves to be honored during contests?

I think both the 160 and 40 band plans are useful tools for normal operating activities. They should be suspended during the congestion of contests.

The lower limit should depend on activity. There is nothing magic about 7.040

For the two weekends of the year that this is really a problem, no, the band plan should be disregarded as the ancient relic it is.

I would honor it if the DX stopped transmitting below 7.040. It's supply and demand. The supply of clear channels is low and the demand is high, so people spread out. If the supply of DX stations below 7.040 were low, then no one would listen there.

I think the band plan should be observed. I notice that most contesters respect the 14300 maritime net.

No. We should get rid of the band plans also outside of contests.
40 meters is a congested band and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to leave almost half of the (EU) band unused when the other part is stacked with dozens of stations on the same frequency. During an ordinary CQ SSB contest there has typically not been enough CW stations to fill even 7000 to 7015 so "defending" the low part is actually extremely unpolite selfishness. Asking 7000 to 7040 is definetely far too much.
Working split for US-EU contacts makes the congestion even worse, as then one station is taking two frequencies.
We will get relief when also non-US stations get some more bandwidth up to 7200. Also then US should really get rid of their band plan and allow everyone to operate SSB in the new common band.

When you include splatter, which is part of the schtick for too many SSB contesters, it would seem only fair for SSB contestants to allow some bandwidth to be unsplattered. 7.000 to 7.040 is not asking all that much.
