This is my first post here but I've learned a lot from the archives in planning the guying of my 58 ft. Rohn 25 tilt-over. I'm now familiar with the prime directive, even if I have to violate it a bit...
This tower was up for years before I owned it, so I "ass-umed" that it was installed per Rohn's instructions. Rohn calls for 4 guys 90 degrees apart, spaced 25 feet from the tower. Lot restrictions make this impossible for me, just as it evidently was for the previous owner, and I'm planning to guy it at two levels per the regular Rohn 25 30 psf chart, spaced 120 degrees apart. I see this as being "equal or better" to the Rohn spec - but would appreciate any comments before I proceed.
Even so, guying is a problem on one side. From what I've read, it is better to maintain the 120 degree spacing between guys and shorten the distance from anchor-to-tower if necessary. If I maintain the 120 degrees, I'll have to move one guy about 8 ft closer. (BTW I will be using the guying adapter and anti-torque bars for the top set of guys).
Lastly, there is the issue of screw-type anchors. I've read the A.B. Chance "Encyclopedia of Anchoring", and while fascinating reading ;-), it doesn't help much if you don't have their probe to determine your soil type. So, I'm planning to go with the Rohn 4A (3'x3'x1.5') concrete anchor instead of the GAS-604 screw anchor shown on the fold-over installation sheet. (Although I think this yellow clay would hold most anything!) The screw anchors would save a lot of work but again I think "equal or better" is OK and from previous comments, there is a lot of concern about screw anchors even though local hams report no problems with them.
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions, the archives of this group are without a doubt the best resource I've found for tower-related information.
