240' foot tower for free! Reply
by K6IF on February 16, 2001 Mail this to a friend!
Check out this auction on ebay - item #1214973136.

I have nothing to do with it - I just noticed it while browsing. This appears to be a 240' free-standing tower with about an 80' rotating top section full of antennas. The owner passed away, and his kids want it out of their yard - for free!

This is an amazing opportunity for someone to pick up a ~$20k tower for nothing. It is located in MI.

Good luck!

It's really a 180 foot tower and it is a monster. It was on the cover of QST back in January 1987. (Story page 15) The cover shot shows Ken (WD8RZE) working about 120 feet above me.

The rotor weighs one ton and is mounted at the 80 foot level as I recall. It's down in the base section about 20 feet from the top of the rigid part.

The tower was originally "built" by John (WD8RXP). There are three semi loads of structural steel in the tower.

John and Ken did all of the construction. they coordinated their moves using HTs and a 4 wheel drive vehicle to pull the parts up the tower.

As I recall the first 20 feet of the base weighed something like 1 1/2 tons...maybe a bit more.

We operated using John's station about a month after the article. It was like being on the DX end of a pileup.

A couple of guys even flew over from Wisconsin to take a look at the operation.

BTW, the base was wide enough that I could park my car inside the base.

BTW, rather than $20K, I understand that there is more like $30K in steel alone.
