In a CW contest, is there an abreviation for calling contest I.E. do you need to CQ CQ DE MW5EPA CONTEST or is there something else...
I've only done one SSB contest so far & I'm hooked
Thanks

hello,
if you would call "CQ CQ de MW5... CONTEST" it would take much too long. just call (depends on how much feedback you expect :) just "CQ TEST MW5EPA MW5EPA TEST" or just "TEST MW5EPA" ... there are many ways of calling cq-test!
a goof possibility of learning the cw-contest"slang" is beinmg a SWL for a contest and just observing several (not too QRQ) stations how they operate...

Rob,
When I became interested in Contesting, one of the things I did was listen to other operators. The are quite a few very excellent operators in the UK, find one of them during a contest and listen to what they are doing. You really can learn quite a bit this way. Good luck and see you in CQWW !

I don't send the characters "CQ" that often. I usually send just CALL CALL TEST or CALL TEST. (In ARRL Sweepstakes I replace TEST with "SS", in Field day I use "FD" and in NA QSO party/Sprint, I use "NA".) I don't leave much time in between to listen - too many ops will try to grab the frequency during the receive periods.
